Columbia’s Annual “Souper” Fundraiser Spreads Community Spirit and Support Just Before Thanksgiving

Columbia Unites for a Heartwarming Tradition: The Annual “Souper” Fundraiser

In the charming city of Columbia, S.C., a lovely tradition unfolds every year just before Thanksgiving, and it’s all about giving back and lending a helping hand. This heartwarming event, known as the “Souper”, is a fantastic collaboration between the Columbia Women’s Shelter, Chick-Fil-A, and the Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Together, these organizations embody the spirit of generosity and community during a time of year especially focused on gratitude and giving.

A Meaningful Purpose

So, what’s the purpose behind this delightful fundraiser? According to Lee Coggiola, a dedicated board member for the Columbia Women’s Shelter, the event serves as a heartfelt reminder of the many blessings people have during the holiday season. “It is to remind people of the blessings that they have this time of year,” she says. This annual tradition has been essential for over 44 years, as it majorly supports the Women’s Shelter by funding their critical programs and services.

But it’s not just about raising funds; it’s about building awareness too. Lee Coggiola emphasizes that the event provides important perspective on the struggles some of our neighbors face. “Sometimes it can be one medical situation and they lose their home. They haven’t done anything wrong, just life circumstances,” she explains. This profound statement highlights the fact that anyone can find themselves in a challenging position at any moment.

The Importance of Community Collaboration

What makes this event perhaps even more special is the tremendous team spirit involved. Brad Smith, the Senior Pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, shared that the collaboration signifies a greater purpose. “This is a team effort from folks across the community,” Smith stated. “This is what we’re here for, is to love and to serve and this is another way for us to get to do that.” It’s always heartening to see community organizations coming together for a common cause, showcasing how teamwork can make a genuine impact.

Support and Shelter

Since the 1970s, the Columbia Women’s Shelter has opened its doors to vulnerable women, providing a safe haven for those facing precarious life situations. The shelter can accommodate about nine women at a time and also operates 17 transitional homes to assist them in their journey toward stability. They don’t just offer a roof over one’s head; they also provide essential resources, support, and encouragement, helping individuals rebuild their lives.

Every Little Bit Helps

Lee Coggiola highlighted that not only does the fundraiser do a remarkable job in supporting the shelter’s efforts, but it also resonates on a deeper level with those who contribute. The act of giving allows individuals to take a moment to remember the struggles many are facing. “Remember that there are people out there that are really struggling, often through no fault of their own, that need a place to go…,” Coggiola remarks. This sentiment is crucial as it reminds us all of our interconnectedness and the importance of lending a helping hand.
