Columbia City Calendar of Events Announced for Summer 2024

Columbia – The city of Columbia has announced an extensive calendar of events taking place throughout the summer. Catering to a broad spectrum of interests, it spans arts, charity, dance, sports, history, meetings and clubs, military activities, music, and more.

Art Events

Alexandra’s Art Studio, 111 Sparkleberry Crossing Road, will be offering a range of adult classes, kids classes, kids’ camps, and art group sessions. The Columbia SC Visitors Center in collaboration with One Columbia for Arts and Culture will host artist pop-ups outside the VC on the weekends, opening up a platform for the local creative community.

Church and Charity Activities

The Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church plans to hold a Vacation Bible School for children aged three to fifth grade in July. The activities are scheduled to span across two days, with both evening and daytime options to accommodate different families’ schedules.

City Announcements

In recognition of Memorial Day later this month, all City of Columbia buildings and offices will remain closed on May 27. However, all garbage and trash collection routes will continue to operate on their usual schedule.

Dance Events

The Palmetto Scottish Country Dance will take place every Monday at the Eastminster Presbyterian Community Life Center. Furthermore, Adult Ballet Classes are now also being held at the Columbia Music Festival Association every Thursday. The beginner-focused class is open to all aged 12 and up.

Fundraisers

The city of Columbia will also be the host to a series of fundraisers. The Living Wright Foundation will hold its second annual Bees & Blossoms Spring Fundraiser, and Keep the Midlands Beautiful continues its annual shoe drive fundraiser throughout May.

Garden Event

Enthusiasts could look forward to the 11th annual Forest Heights Community Plant Swap, poised to bring together gardening experts, beginners, and everyone in between.

Historical Tours and Talks

Historic Columbia will host numerous events in May, including Kensington Mansion Tours, Free Sunday at the Modjeska Monteith Simkins House, and a Concert in the Gardens. These will provide residents and visitors a chance to explore the rich local history and culture of Columbia.

Market/Sale

The Market at Richland Library and The Brookhaven Community Annual Spring Yard Sale are standout events for those interested in supporting local vendors, artists, and artisans.

Meetings/Clubs

A number of service clubs and support groups are also meeting in the city, providing opportunities for socialization and community work. They include the Spring Valley Rotary Club, Forest Acres Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Columbia East, Rotary Club of Five Points, and a list of others.

Military Commemorations

On July 4th, the much-awaited annual Salute From The Shore will take place as a tribute to the nation’s military forces. The event features a stunning flyover of various military and civilian aircraft along South Carolina’s coastline.

Workshops/Classes

Workshops and classes from entities such as Turning Pages SC, Shepherd’s Center of Columbia, and South Carolina Farm Service Agency span a variety of topics from tutor training to urban farming.

In sum, Columbia appears to have a packed and diverse calendar of events for the summer. For residents and visitors alike, there is no shortage of engaging activities.
