Columbia Water Services Remain Steady Amid Hurricane Helene Challenges

Columbia Stays Strong with Reliable Water Services After Hurricane Helene

Hey there, residents of Columbia! We have some reassuring updates for you regarding our water and sewer services following Hurricane Helene. City officials have stepped up to clear the air and put any worries to rest about our water system during this stormy weather.

What’s the Word from City Officials?

On Tuesday morning, the City of Columbia released a statement that reiterated how reliable and steady our water system remains, even with Hurricane Helene rolling through. That’s right! Water and sewer services for Columbia Water customers have continued smoothly without any interruptions. The team handling our water treatment and distribution is keeping everything running just as it should, and they don’t foresee any disruptions due to Helene.

Reliable Operations at Treatment Plants

Columbia’s Canal Water Treatment Plant and the Lake Murray Water Treatment Plant are performing their usual operations without any hitches. Beyond that, our utility operations for both water treatment and distribution, along with wastewater collection and treatment, are all on track. This is certainly good news, especially considering some of the challenges we faced in the past.

Understanding the Storm’s Impact

While parts of our city may be feeling some fallout from the storm, the Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant is still operational. Yes, there has been flooding on Simmon Tree Lane due to high flows in the Congaree River, but rest assured, this has no effect on the plant’s functions. The only hiccup is that the flooding has impacted parking arrangements, but who cares when the actual work at the Metro plant goes on, right?

Concerns from Residents

Officials have mentioned that they completely understand why many residents might be worried about utility services—especially those who experienced the floods back in October 2015. Those past experiences can make anyone a little skittish, and it’s completely normal to feel that way. In fact, following the storm, rumors began swirling on social media about possible wastewater plant malfunctions or even the drastic measure of the city shutting off water supply. But don’t worry; everything city officials say is backed by facts!

Setting the Record Straight

During a press conference on Monday, Clint Shealy, the Assistant City Manager at Columbia Water, addressed these rumors head-on. He assured everyone that “none of that is true.” In fact, he emphasized how those claims couldn’t be further from the truth. What a relief to hear!

Need to Report an Issue?

If you happen to notice any water or wastewater service disruption or have any non-emergency water concerns, you can easily reach out by calling 803-545-3300. The City has made it easy for you to stay connected and informed!

Stay Informed and Stay Safe!

In conclusion, Columbia’s water services remain fully operational, and the city is doing a fantastic job keeping everything on track, even during stormy weather. So let’s breathe easy, stay safe, and appreciate the hard work going on behind the scenes to keep our community running smoothly. Remember, it’s always nice to stay informed, prepared, and connected to your city services!
