What an amazing weekend it was in Columbia, South Carolina! The annual Famously Hot Pride festival made quite the splash, welcoming thousands of spirited individuals ready to celebrate love, community, and, most importantly, Pride! Held from October 18 to 20, this vibrant event brought an incredible mix of joy and purpose back to Main Street.
To put it into perspective, Famously Hot Pride has a rich history that dates back to 1990. What began as a courageous protest for gay rights has evolved into a colorful tapestry of unity and celebration. While the festival has certainly grown over the years, the essence of advocacy and remembrance always lingers in the air, reminding us of the battles fought for LGBTQ+ rights.
The weekend was packed with performances, engaging events, and community gatherings that created an atmosphere bursting with excitement. It’s no surprise that the festivity attracts so many folks from all walks of life. On Saturday, Big Freedia, the renowned queen of bounce music, stole the show, serving up an unforgettable performance on the Main Street main stage. Everyone was on their feet, dancing and singing along to the beats!
Friday night was equally thrilling, featuring a sensational lineup of drag queens from the hit show RuPaul’s Drag Race who graced the stage to display jaw-dropping talent and charisma. Eureka O’Hara lit up the crowd with an electrifying performance that had everyone cheering. Local queens also took center stage, proving that Columbia has abundant local talent. They, along with queer musicians like Adam Mac, showcased their artistry, reminding everyone to embrace their true selves.
The weather was definitely a plus! With a mainly sunny sky and temperatures soaring to a delightful 82°F, attendees basked in the warmth while enjoying all the festivities. A light breeze seemed to dance with the crowd, creating a perfect atmosphere for a weekend bursting with joy. As day turned into night, the clear skies ensured the celebrations continued brightly into the evening.
There’s something truly special about gatherings like these. They really highlight the strong sense of community that Columbia embodies. Walking around, one could see various booths featuring local artists, businesses, and organizations, each adding a unique flair to the festivities. From delicious local food to handcrafted art pieces, there was no shortage of goodies to indulge in. The sense of belonging was palpable, as old friends reconnected and new connections formed.
Amid all the fun, it’s important to remember the core message of the festival: the fight for equality and acceptance. While laughter and joy filled the air, the festival also served as a platform to inspire change, educate others, and promote inclusivity. Activists and speakers shared powerful messages reminding everyone that although strides have been made, the journey toward equality continues.
As the weekend came to a close, attendees left with full hearts and unforgettable memories. The Famously Hot Pride festival not only provided a space to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community but also reminded everyone in Columbia and beyond that love is love, and acceptance is key. Until next year! We can’t wait to see what’s in store, but one thing is for certain: the spirit of pride will always shine brightly here!
