Celebrating the Life of Carolyn Ann (Sawyer) Davenport

Lexington, SC – The community is coming together to remember a beloved mother, teacher, and friend, Carolyn Ann (Sawyer) Davenport, who peacefully passed away on September 21, 2024. Surrounded by her loving family, Carolyn’s life was a tapestry of rich experiences that touched many hearts.

Born at home in Johnston, SC in 1938, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Horace Witt Sawyer and Voila Mae Allen. She was raised in a household where education was of utmost importance, laying the groundwork for her own illustrious career as a teacher. After finishing high school at Edgefield High School, she furthered her education at the University of South Carolina and later achieved her Master’s Degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.

Carolyn found a home at the First Baptist Church in Edgefield, where her musical talents began to flourish. It was there she learned to play the piano, a skill she would carry with her for the rest of her life, playing mainly by ear. Her dedication to music resonated with many, and she used her talents to enhance the lives of those around her.

Her teaching career spanned various locales, including high schools and middle schools in Clemson, Johnston, Edgefield, and even Norfolk, VA. In 1973, Carolyn made the move to Orlando, FL, where she continued her passion for teaching at schools such as Apopka High School and Glenridge Middle School, eventually becoming a guidance counselor.

Family was paramount to Carolyn. After retiring, she moved back to Lexington, SC, to be closer to her cherished grandchildren and the landscapes of “God’s Country.” As a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, she engaged in an array of activities, including serving on the church council, participating in Stephen Ministry and the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and sharing her wisdom as a longtime Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her church involvement, Carolyn volunteered her time at local non-profits, such as Mission Lexington, and participated in the Elections Commission, always striving to give back to the community she loved. She was a fervent supporter of her grandchildren, frequently attending their music and sporting events, embodying the role of a proud grandmother.

Carolyn had an insatiable zest for life. Her interests included gardening, politics, reading, and even a newfound love for exercise later in life. She was known for her sense of humor, always bringing laughter to those around her. And let’s not forget her love for pets—she cherished not only her own but also the furry friends of her family.

She was a dedicated mother who worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for her children. An ardent fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks, she instilled a love for college football in her family, despite a few grandchildren choosing to wear the orange and purple of Clemson. Carolyn is lovingly remembered by her children—Cecelia Lynn (Maxwell) Fehner (Herb), Richard Sawyer Maxwell (Rachel), Ann Carolyn Davenport, and stepson, Robert (Bobby) Everett Davenport, Jr. (Kari)—along with her adoring grandchildren, Brian, Steven, Sarah, and Michael.

Final Farewell

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church located at 1430 Northlake Dr., Lexington, SC 29072. Following the service, Carolyn will be laid to rest at Mt. of Olives cemetery at 1:30 PM. The family will welcome friends from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Mission Lexington, a cause that Carolyn proudly supported throughout her life. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Mercantile Funeral Home – Johnston Chapel. Memories and tributes can be shared on their online memorial site.

As we reflect on Carolyn’s life, let us remember her indomitable spirit and the countless lives she impacted during her remarkable journey. She will be dearly missed but her legacy of love, service, and family will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
