This past Saturday, the vibrant city of Columbia was alive with energy as the annual University of South Carolina Dance Marathon took center stage. From 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., students, faculty, and community members gathered at the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center to partake in a joyful event that has become a beloved tradition.
Over the course of 27 years, this cheer-filled gathering has turned into a remarkable beacon of hope, raising over $9 million for Prisma Health Children’s Hospital. Every dollar collected during the event directly contributes to life-changing initiatives benefiting patients and their families, making a tangible difference in their lives. Talk about dancing for a cause!
A significant portion of the funds raised goes towards the Child Life Program, which plays a critical role in the emotional well-being of pediatric patients. The program focuses on stress reduction and provides healthy coping strategies, all aimed at promoting comfort, security, and safety for children undergoing medical treatment.
The Dance Marathon wasn’t just about raising funds; it was also a day filled with fun! More than a thousand enthusiastic students came together to dance, perform, and play games. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, laughter, and community spirit, as everyone cheered each other on and enjoyed the festivities. From dance-offs to hilarious games, the event showcased the incredible camaraderie and dedication of the participants.
As luck would have it, the Dance Marathon was just one highlight of an exciting weekend in Columbia! On February 22nd, the city also hosted the South Carolina Black History Parade and Festival. Kicking off at 1 p.m., the parade began at the intersection of Hampton and Harden Streets with Senator Maggie Glover proudly serving as grand marshal.
The fun didn’t stop there! Following the parade, festival-goers made their way to MLK Park on Greene Street to enjoy a lively festival featuring mouthwatering food and refreshing drinks. As an additional treat, the festival included a performance by the talented comedian Annie McKnight, ensuring that laughter and joy filled the air.
The collaborative efforts put forth during the Dance Marathon and the Black History events highlight the incredible spirit of community in Columbia. Beyond the fundraising for a worthy cause, these events celebrated unity, heritage, and the simple joy of being together.
With a weekend full of memories made and lives changed, the University of South Carolina Dance Marathon continues to shine as a testament to the power of unity and compassion. The event stands as a reminder of the positive impact that can be achieved when people come together for a common cause. As the city recaps the success of this year’s marathon, all eyes will be on next year’s event, already buzzing with anticipation as they continue to make a difference in the lives of pediatric patients.
