Sponsor Our ArticlesDarren Powell has been appointed as the new Academy Director for Nashville Soccer Club, bringing over 25 years of coaching experience. Known for his successful track record in player development, Powell has previously worked with notable academies and coached future MLS pros. His extensive credentials and passion for soccer position him well to lead Nashville’s academy as it aims to nurture local talent.
Exciting news is buzzing throughout the vibrant city of Nashville! On March 5, 2025, the Nashville Soccer Club rolled out the welcome mat for their new Academy Director, Darren Powell. With a coaching career spanning over 25 years, Powell is bringing a treasure trove of experience and knowledge to the local soccer scene.
Before taking on this new role, Powell made waves as the Head Coach at Lexington SC in the USL Championship, starting in 2023. He’s not just a coach, though; he has a rich history of nurturing talent at some well-known academies like Orlando City SC and Inter Miami CF. At Orlando, he earned the title of Director and had great success molding future stars of Major League Soccer.
Interestingly, Mike Jacobs, the General Manager of Nashville SC, highlighted Powell’s impressive knack for creating pathways for professional players within MLS. This kind of praise sets the scene perfectly for what’s to come under Powell’s leadership.
Powell is genuinely thrilled to join the Nashville SC Academy family. He shared his appreciation for the thorough interview process conducted by a dynamic trio including Ian Ayre, Mike Jacobs, and B.J. Callaghan. It’s safe to say that this opportunity is a dream come true for the Nottingham-born coach.
Let’s rewind a bit to the early days: Powell was not just any player during his collegiate years. He starred at the University of North Carolina Greensboro from 1991 to 1994, where he took on the role of team captain. During his college days, he racked up over 100 career points, making him the very first player in the school’s history to achieve this milestone at the Division I level.
Powell’s coaching journey kicked off in 1998 at Greensboro College, where he led the team to three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. After a successful stint as an assistant coach at UNC Greensboro from 2001 to 2004, he took the helm as the Head Coach at Elon University in 2005. There, he made history with the most wins in the program’s history—94 victories. Under his guidance, Elon claimed five Southern Conference championships and made three NCAA appearances, which included a remarkable first-ever trip in 2011.
Powell’s impact didn’t stop there. He coached some noteworthy talents, including future MLS pros like Clint Irwin and Dan Lovitz. His next big step came in 2014 when he was appointed Academy Director for Orlando City SC, where he also managed the U23 and U18 teams. The academy flourished under his guidance, producing five homegrown players for their First Team and earning the title of the most improved academy by U.S. Soccer Development Academy in 2015.
After serving as the inaugural Technical Director for San Antonio FC in 2016 and leading the team to an impressive 59 wins over four seasons, Powell transitioned to various roles at Inter Miami CF from 2020 to 2023. There, his legacy continued as he oversaw eight players who signed homegrown contracts with the First Team, in addition to guiding 30 Academy players to their professional debuts.
Darren Powell holds a robust array of credentials, including the US Soccer Pro License and US Soccer Academy Directors License. He also boasts a master’s degree in Sporting Directorship from the Global Institute of Sport. Not to mention, he shares a love for soccer with his wife, Elise, and their two children, both of whom are also involved in the beautiful game. Daughter Naomi plays professionally with Hearts in the SWPL, while son Caleb plays for UNC Wilmington and previously with Sarasota in USL League Two.
As Powell steps into his new role with Nashville SC Academy, the anticipation is palpable. The club and the community can undoubtedly expect great things on the horizon!
