Born on January 14, 1938, in the small town of Tabor City, Andy was the cherished son of Johnnie and Ethel Anderson. From a young age, Andy displayed passion and dedication, especially in sports during his high school years. An inspiring coach affectionately gave him the nickname “Andy,” which would stick with him throughout his life. As graduation approached, he made a significant decision to join the United States Army, where he embarked on a journey that would shape his identity.
Andy dedicated over two decades of his life to military service, rising through the ranks to achieve the esteemed title of Sergeant Major. He traveled far and wide, serving in countries such as France, Vietnam, and Germany, as well as various U.S. bases—including Fort Bragg and Fort Jackson. Each station left a mark on him, but it was in Orleans, France, where he found true love.
While stationed in France, Andy crossed paths with the wonderful Betty Berry, and their love story began. They celebrated countless milestones together, including an upcoming 66th wedding anniversary on December 22, 2024. The bond they shared was a testament to their commitment, love, and mutual respect.
Throughout his military career, Andy garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. His perseverance didn’t go unnoticed; he earned the respect and admiration of both officers and fellow enlisted personnel for his unwavering commitment to excellence. His passion for the country was evident in his actions—he would never miss a chance to salute flags at parades or stand proudly for the national anthem, embodying the spirit of a true patriot.
