Young performers bringing creativity to the stage at Village Square Theatre.
David LaTorre is set to lead the Village Square Theatre as its new artistic director. With a rich background in theater and local roots, LaTorre aims to revitalize the community theater, focusing on youth programs and diversity in productions. His debut project is a junior edition of ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ premiering on June 1. This significant appointment is expected to usher in an exciting chapter for VST, enhancing its cultural offerings and community engagement.
Lexington is buzzing with excitement as David LaTorre steps into the spotlight as the new artistic director of the beloved Village Square Theatre (VST). This choice is particularly significant because it not only marks a fresh face in leadership but also signifies a new chapter for VST, which has been a staple in the community since its humble beginnings in the 1960s as the Lexington County Arts Association. Who knew that a converted movie theater in the Village Square Shopping Center, nestled right off Highway 378, would become such a cultural gem?
LaTorre is no stranger to the theater scene. Having grown up in West Columbia, his passion for performing arts sparked during high school when he auditioned for a role in The Sound of Music at VST itself. His impressive talent earned him the part of Friedrich, and from that moment on, his love for theater only continued to blossom. While he journeyed through various performances and productions, a special mention goes to his mentor, Debra Leopard, who encouraged him every step of the way.
With a Bachelor’s degree in musical theater from Anderson University, LaTorre has packed quite the resume. His journey took him to sunny Florida, where he made waves at theme parks like Disney and Universal. However, after the challenges posed by the pandemic, he found himself returning to Columbia, ready to reinvigorate the local theater scene.
His debut performance at Town Theatre in 2022 for Bright Star was nothing short of stellar. Following that, he took on the role of youth director there, utilizing his experience to shape the next generation of performers. Now, his eyes are set on the exciting road ahead at VST. His first project? A junior edition of Alice in Wonderland, which will kick off on June 1—and it promises to be a whimsical adventure!
VST has long relied on the generous support of volunteers, and with LaTorre as the theatre’s first full-time employee, there’s a palpable sense of enthusiasm in the air. His hiring is a strategic move by VST’s executive committee, recognizing the immense potential he holds for expanding the theater’s youth programs and community outreach efforts. In his new role, LaTorre will not only teach and direct but will also collaborate closely with the board on play selection and planning, ensuring that VST continues to evolve and thrive.
LaTorre is eager to strengthen VST’s connection with even more people in the community. He believes that the theater should reflect the rich diversity of its audience, making it a welcoming space for everyone. Under his leadership, the focus will be on equipping young performers with invaluable skills like teamwork and personal growth, both on and off the stage. Who wouldn’t want to jump into that magical world?
And just when you thought LaTorre’s calendar couldn’t get any busier, he’s also directing a youth production of Once Upon a Mattress over at Town Theatre. Talk about a surging passion for theater! It’s clear that LaTorre is dedicated to nurturing the love for performing arts in Lexington, making it an exciting time for both seasoned performers and aspiring stars alike.
As Lexington embraces this new era at Village Square Theatre, one thing is clear: the stage is set for an unforgettable journey, and who knows what enchanting tales will unfold in the months to come? Welcome aboard, David LaTorre! The curtain is about to rise.
