Lexington, SC – A devastating and fatal crash involving a motorcycle, school bus, and a work van took place in Lexington County, resulting in the tragic death of a man. Local law enforcement has identified the driver of the work van as at fault, citing him for operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
The accident occurred on Industrial Drive in Lexington, on a Monday. A local citizen, Jon Douglas Ratcliffe, a 45-year-old resident of Lexington, suffered fatal injuries from the crash and was announced dead on the scene. Ratcliffe was riding the motorcycle involved in the accident.
Giovanni Mendoza-Jimenez, a 20-year-old Mexican citizen, is alleged to be the driver responsible for the fatal accident. Mendoza-Jimenez, driving a work van at the time, is charged with driving too fast for current road conditions, failure to stop for a school bus, and driving without a license.
Law enforcement officials asserted that Mendoza-Jimenez was “unlawfully in the United States,” and consequently, a retaining order was filed against him. Authorities plan to place him under the jurisdiction of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mendoza-Jimenez did not notice the stationary motorcycle and school bus and crashed into them. Ratcliffe, the motorcyclist, was pinned against the bus due to the impact and pronounced dead on the scene.
At the time of the crash, the school bus had seven students aboard, one of whom sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by Emergency Medical Services. Meanwhile, Mendoza-Jimenez suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital by EMS.
Authorities are still working to ascertain whether Mendoza-Jimenez was distracted by a phone while driving during the crash. If confirmed, it could lead to more charges levied against him.
This tragic event has sent shockwaves through Lexington County and beyond. As the community mourns the loss of Jon Douglas Ratcliffe, they also grapple with the ongoing investigation and its potential long-term consequences.
The community awaits due process for Mendoza-Jimenez, anxiously watching as this case unfolds. Penal penalties, immigration implications, and the pursuit of justice for Ratcliffe are all critical points of community interest.
This tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of observing traffic rules, driving responsibly, and the catastrophic consequences of driving without a license.
