COLUMBIA, S.C.: Starting from June 2, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will commence the demolition of the old bridge located at the intersection of I-20 highway and Broad River Road, declared at exit 65. This commencement is expected to cause detours and changes in the usual traffic flow that drivers will have to accommodate.
The SCDOT has mapped out the detour plan as follows: Traffic will be directed onto the off-ramp to Broad River Road at exit 65, through the intersection and then back down the on-ramp to I-20. This detour is to ensure that the demolition activity can take place without any obstruction.
According to the SCDOT, the westbound traffic on I-20 will be re-routed through the designated detour from Sunday, June 2 to Tuesday, June 4. The detour will be effective from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on a nightly basis. Meanwhile, the eastbound traffic will be redirected through the detour from Sunday, June 9 to Tuesday, June 11, during the similar hours of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. These timings have been carefully chosen to cause minimal disruptions for the traveling public.
Message boards and construction signs will be placed along the I-20 highway to alert and inform motorists of the upcoming temporary traffic pattern. In addition, law enforcement will be present at the interchange of Broad River Road and I-20 (Exit 65) for further traffic control and to ensure safety during the detour phase.
The primary purpose of this detour is the demolition of the old bridge on Broad River Road. However, according to the SCDOT, this demolition will pave the way for the construction of a second new bridge on the Broad River Road bridge over I-20. This new bridge will be used by drivers traveling north towards Irmo.
Given these changes in traffic pattern, drivers are strongly advised to exercise caution and to plan their journeys accordingly in order to avoid possible delays. The SCDOT encourages those affected to stay updated on the project’s progress via their official project webpage for other project details and updates.
The construction is presumably going to affect areas of Lexington and Richland, with detours and altered traffic patterns. The local community is urged to remain patient during this period of transition and alteration.
