Lexington’s Dinosaur Delight: A Holiday Display Like No Other!
When you think of the holiday season, dinosaurs probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. But that’s exactly the festive twist happening at the Price household in Lexington, where a sprawling yard filled with dinosaurs has become a local sensation!
More Than Just a Yard Display
Nestled along Augusta Road, just off Highway 1, the Price family’s yard has transformed into a Dino Wonderland. The owner of the home, Christopher Price, has turned his yard into what can only be described as a dinosaur extravaganza. Each night, the yard lights up with the glow of Christmas lights, illuminating the charmingly crafted creatures made from insulation foam board. “It’s really become a bit of a landmark,” Christopher proudly states, and he’s not wrong!
But where did this dino-themed delight come from? According to Christopher, it all started a couple of years ago when he crafted his very first dinosaur to delight his two sons, aged 8 and 6. Those initial creations made their grand debut for Halloween in 2022, and they’ve been a staple of the holiday season ever since!
The Jurassic Collection Grows
What started as a few fun decorations has blossomed into a full-blown collection of 11 dinosaurs that roam around the yard. Included in this charming cast of characters is a fierce-looking velociraptor, an impressive pterodactyl, and Price’s first creation, an ankylosaurus. This labor of love boasts intricate details including individual scales and a fearsome tail club.
During the day, the dinosaurs appear flat and propped up, but at night, they come alive with a flicker of lights, giving passing cars a playful reason to slow down and take a peek. One of the standout pieces is the T. rex named “Lex,” who has found a permanent home in the Price garden. Although the other dinosaurs are usually stored away for most of the year, Lex has become a beloved fixture, and it even got a fresh coat of bright pink paint this year to support a good cause.
A Heartfelt Cause
Yes, even the dino party has a purpose! This year, Lex donned his pink hue as part of a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, helping raise cash for breast cancer research and treatment. Christopher creatively dedicated Lex to honor around 80 individuals who have battled cancer, bringing life and color to both his yard and a heartfelt cause. The project raised an impressive $1,500, something Christopher calls “a lot of fun for a good cause.”
Halloween and Beyond
With Halloween being a huge hit, the Price household attracted about 300 trick-or-treaters this past October, all eager for a photo op with the dinosaurs. “They just can’t get enough of them!” Christopher chuckles, recalling the sheer excitement the kids have as they hurry to snap their pictures with the giant lizards.
There are whispers of even more dino additions in the future, including an enormous brontosaurus that will undoubtedly turn even more heads. “I’ve got other ideas, but I can’t get away from dinosaurs,” he admits. It looks like this enchanting yard will continue to be a place of wonder, joy, and creativity for years to come.
So next time you’re cruising down Augusta Road in Lexington, don’t forget to slow down and appreciate the delightful dinosaur holiday display! It’s not just a yard – it’s a joyful part of the community, filled with love, laughter, and a massive dose of prehistoric charm!
