IRMO, S.C. – A recent disturbance at H.E. Corley Elementary School has led to a major police response and the arrest of a 22-year-old man. The incident unfolded on a Friday morning that started off just like any other for students and staff at the school. However, things quickly took a turn when a suspicious vehicle caught the attention of a School Resource Officer (SRO) on duty.
It was around 9:15 AM when the SRO noticed the suspicious vehicle parked near the school. Approaching the vehicle, the officer was immediately greeted with the distinct odor of marijuana, prompting him to take action. He called for backup units to assist in handling the situation. While two individuals were taken into custody, two others attempted to flee the scene.
In light of the situation, the school was placed on lockdown as Irmo Police arrived on the scene. The safety of students and staff took top priority, and the quick response by law enforcement ensured that everyone remained safe during the unfolding events. Authorities quickly spotted the fleeing individuals at a distance from the school.
Javon Quattlebaum, the man at the center of this troubling disturbance, was detained by police. He now faces several serious charges, including possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, giving false information to law enforcement, disturbing a school, and trespassing after notification to leave.
The second individual involved in the incident was a minor who was released into the care of their parents. Meanwhile, the two men who had fled from the scene were pursued on foot by multiple deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and Irmo Police. Unfortunately, those two individuals were not located, creating a tense atmosphere in the area.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department wants to reassure the community that they do not believe the suspects pose any further danger. They are actively seeking assistance from the public and encourage anyone with information related to the incident to reach out. You’re encouraged to dial 9-1-1 or contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department at 1(800)576-3000 if you have any leads or insights that could help them in their investigation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that lurk even in the most unsuspecting places, such as a school. Parents and community members are understandably concerned about safety in the wake of such disturbances. It’s important for everyone to stay informed and vigilant, especially when it comes to protecting our children.
As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to support educators and school officials in their efforts to maintain a safe learning environment. It’s a team effort, and with the prompt action taken by law enforcement, it’s clear that everyone is committed to ensuring that schools remain a sanctuary where students can learn and grow without fear.
