Details have emerged in the murder case involving a man from Winnsboro, which took place earlier this week. Edward Leroy Smith, 39, has been charged with murder, following the discovery of a man’s body inside a burning home in Lexington County, South Carolina, on July 23, 2024, according to recent police reports.
Smith stands accused of the stabbing death of Caldwell Melton Motley, Jr. and making an attempt on the life of another unidentified man. The Lexington County Sheriff’s report released new information surrounding the circumstances of the chilling incident.
Emergency services discovered Motley’s body upon arrival at the scene of a house fire on Oak Ridge Lane in Lexington County. The emergency personnel also found another man with injuries in a separate garage-type building on the property, who was immediately rushed to the medical facilities.
“During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that Smith stabbed Motley to death,” said Lexington County Sheriff, Jay Coon. “Detectives also established that Smith injured the other man at the scene by striking him with an edged object.”
Various investigative elements pointed towards Smith’s involvement in the heinous crime. Through victim and witness interviews, physical evidence, and electronic data, Smith was placed at the Oak Ridge Lane property shortly before an emergency call was made—reporting smoke emitting from the house.
Smith was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, and he was subsequently denied bail following a hearing on Wednesday morning. He is currently detained at the Lexington County Detention Center, pending further court proceedings.
Smith, former owner of Smith’s Towing in Winnsboro, had been residing in the Blythewood area recently. Further specifics regarding his arrest and case details will be released as they become available.
Law enforcement officials pledged their ongoing commitment to this case to ensure the subsequent justice process. “We will continue to closely examine this case and ensure that the full arm of the law is applied,” Sheriff Coon stated. Further updates to this story will be provided when fresh information emerges.
