COLUMBIA, S.C.: Community Comes Together for Election Awareness

This past Saturday, the atmosphere in Columbia, South Carolina, was buzzing with enthusiasm as the First Nazareth Baptist Church and the Get Out The Vote Committee joined forces to kick off their Men’s Day Political Forum. This engaging event was all about getting the community ready for the upcoming elections in November 2024. If you missed it, you might be wondering what it was all about!

A Hub for Voter Education

The forum was designed to equip residents with essential tools and information on how to become more active participants in the electoral process. Deacon Socrates Greene, who played a pivotal role in organizing the event, talked about the forum’s mission. “There are three arms to get out to vote: voter registration, voter education, and voter outreach, what we call getting souls to the polls,” he explained, adding, “So, this was an education arm.”

What Residents Learned

Attendees walked away with valuable insights. Guest speakers like Dr. Jim Felder provided crucial information about where to find sample ballots and the various locations for early voting scattered throughout the Midlands. Many learned about absentee voting options, which allow you to mail in your ballot ahead of the election, with a request deadline set for October 25th, 2024.

As political discussions heat up, some local residents expressed that the current political environment fueled their desire to learn more, particularly about initiatives like Project 2025. This proposed presidential transition project from the conservative Heritage Foundation has raised eyebrows and sparked debates among various community members.

Encouraging Civic Engagement

Deacon Greene emphasized the importance of spreading awareness. “I hope that we can get some education into the hands of people, allowing them to share it and encourage others to vote because that’s the name of the game,” he said. His enthusiasm for empowering others to understand their voting rights was infectious.

Calling All Young Volunteers!

Rich with opportunities, the forum also made a noteworthy point that you only need to be 16 years old to become a poll worker. This opens the door for the youth in the community to get involved and learn more about the voting process from the ground up.

Important Dates to Remember

  • Voter registration is open online until October 6th, 2024.
  • Early voting is scheduled from October 21st to November 2nd, 2024.

With so many resources now available, it’s easier than ever for Columbia residents to feel prepared and connected during this election season. It’s not just about making your voice heard; it’s about understanding how every vote counts and the impact it can have on your community.

Stay Informed!

For those wanting to stay updated, seeking out more information, and perhaps getting involved, now is the time! As new events and gatherings unfold, remember to take the opportunity to learn, share, and, most importantly, vote.

As the excitement builds toward November 2024, let’s take the necessary steps together to make sure everyone in Columbia is aware of their voting rights and responsibilities. Until next time, get informed, engage, and let your voice be heard!
