Exciting News For Columbia: A New Boutique Hotel on the Horizon!

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as work officially kicks off on The Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista, a unique boutique hotel that is set to breathe new life into a historic fire station. The Florence-based hospitality organization Raines is at the helm of this transformative project, and it promises to be a remarkable addition to the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Turning History into Hospitality

Just imagine—what was once the Columbia Central Fire Station is being lovingly converted into a cozy and modern hotel. This project is especially thrilling as it honors the history of one of Columbia’s oldest fire stations while incorporating sophisticated modern amenities that today’s travelers expect. Guests can look forward to 59 beautifully designed rooms, a fitness center, a board room, a relaxing lounge, and even valet parking!

Scheduled to open its doors in the fall of 2025, this welcoming space is not just a new hotel; it’s a testament to the vision of the passionate folks at Raines. They’re also making a commitment to the community by working hand in hand with the University of South Carolina’s CarolinaLIFE program. This partnership aims to provide valuable work opportunities for students and young adults with intellectual disabilities, much like the brand’s first hotel in Clemson.

Meet the Dream Team Behind the Idea

The enthusiasm doesn’t stop there! The Shepherd Hotel brand was co-founded by a trio of remarkable individuals. Rick Hayduk, a seasoned hotel visionary; Rich Davies, a third-generation real estate developer; and Dabo Swinney, the renowned head football coach at Clemson University. Their collective brainchild goes beyond typical hospitality; it’s about creating an inclusive environment that empowers individuals from diverse backgrounds. As Hayduk shares, his aspirations were inspired by his two children with Down Syndrome, leading to the launch of a hotel that champions inclusivity and diversity.

Columbia’s reception for the hotel has already been positive. With the hotel being a hop, skip, and jump from the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Statehouse, and the bustling Colonial Life Arena, it’s strategically placed in the heart of the thriving Vista district.

Culinary Delights Await

But wait, there’s more! Foodies rejoice! Columbia’s own Kevin Johnson, a James Beard Award nominee and University of South Carolina alumnus, will oversee the hotel’s food and beverage program. The on-site restaurant will delight both locals and hotel guests alike with a mix of tantalizing small plates and a crafted selection of cocktails, beer, and wine. It’s bound to be a go-to spot for delicious culinary experiences!

A Community-Centered Vision

David Tart, the managing partner at Raines, shared their passion for the hospitality industry and deep-rooted commitment to local communities. He stated, “We are excited to provide valuable skills and career opportunities for students and young adults with intellectual disabilities.” With a focus on not just providing a place to stay, The Shepherd Hotel Columbia Vista aims to leave a lasting positive impact on the community.

Looking Ahead

The arrival of The Shepherd Hotel marks a new chapter for Columbia, filled with anticipation and optimism. As the construction gears up and the hotel takes shape, locals are eager to see how this initiative will enhance the area’s charm and culture.

So, if you’re as excited about this project as we are, keep watching this space! Columbia is set to become an even more inviting destination, and we can’t wait to see how this historic transformation unfolds!
