Exciting Transformation on the Horizon for Columbia’s Historic Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building

Exciting Transformation on the Horizon for Columbia’s Historic Building

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as one of its iconic structures, the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building, is set to undergo a significant transformation. This historic building, which has been a part of the Columbia landscape since 1912, is getting a multi-million-dollar makeover that promises to bring new life while preserving its nostalgic charm.

A Glimpse into the Past

For those who might not be familiar, this 9,800-square-foot treasure has seen a lot over the decades. Originally established as the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Company, it served as a local hub for sweet treats, sodas, and tobacco products. Located right across from the historic Seaboard Train Station on Lincoln Street, the building was once known for housing the city’s only mechanical elevator and was a paradise for candy lovers, boasting original candy-making tools and vast steel tables brimming with delectable snacks.

A Vision for the Future

In 2021, the building found new ownership under Jerry and Ben’s LLC, a Columbia-based real estate investment firm, who enlisted the help of experienced partners to re-envision this historic structure. According to a recent announcement from Trinity Partners, the renovation will aim to maintain the building’s classic features while upgrading its infrastructure to modern standards.

Building the Buzz

The renovations are managed by Boyer Commercial Construction, with architectural insights from MCA Architecture of Greenville. Construction is slated for completion by December 2024, and there’s no doubt this will become a much-anticipated destination in the Vista District. The project also benefits from The Bailey Bill and various historic preservation tax credits, ensuring that the restoration efforts are well-supported.

Making Room for New Opportunities

Once completed, the building will feature a modern workspace on its upper floor, which will become the new headquarters for Beam & Hinge LLC—a local custom website design and development company. Currently situated on Columbia’s Main Street, this move coincides with the firm’s 10-year anniversary, making the occasion even more special!

The first floor of the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building will not be left out of the action; it is being divided into two separate units, each offering over 1,900 square feet for retail or office tenants. This versatile space is intended to attract dynamic businesses, contributing to the bustling Vista District atmosphere.

A Community Revival

Dan Stanton, the CEO of Beam & Hinge, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The renovation of the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building and the relocation of Beam & Hinge are expected to bring significant benefits to the Vista, fostering a sense of pride and continuity in preserving Columbia’s architectural history.” With such passionate sentiments, it’s clear this project is about more than just bricks and mortar—it’s about community and collaboration.

Looking Ahead

As Columbia’s business landscape continues to grow and evolve, the restoration of the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building serves as an exciting chapter in the city’s history. With the seamless blend of preservation and innovation, locals and visitors alike can look forward to a revitalized space that honors the past while embracing the future.

Keep an eye on this project—big things are happening in Columbia!
