CHAPIN, S.C. – Big news is buzzing around Chapin as Lexington School District Five recently announced the approval of a whopping $240 million referendum during a press conference that had everyone smiling with anticipation! The district is ready to transform education in the area, starting with shiny new schools and much-needed upgrades to existing facilities.
On Election Day, about 39,612 residents from the district cast their votes, showcasing an enthusiastic thumbs-up for progress. With nearly 70 percent of voters backing the referendum, it’s clear that the community is eager for change. Only 16,348 residents voiced their concerns and voted against it. It’s been a long time coming; the last bond referendum was 16 years ago!
Superintendent Akil E. Ross took center stage during the press conference, expressing excitement about what lies ahead. “We are now moving from the phase of a district plan to the people’s project,” he stated, filled with pride for what the future holds. The idea for this transformative project began brewing back in August last year, and now it’s coming to fruition.
So, what’s on the agenda? Well, get ready for some fantastic upgrades! The funds will help build a brand-new Dutch Fork Elementary School and add new classroom wings at Lake Murray and Chapin Elementary schools. Why is this so important? Because currently, nearly 24 classrooms at these schools are separate from the main buildings, raising some significant safety concerns.
In a refreshing move, the district even invited students to share their ideas on how the funds should be utilized. “It’s not spoken about a lot but the instructional projects we have, preparing the students for their future is vital,” Ross said. Imagine students learning with AI and digital solutions to gear them up for the modern workforce. Exciting, right?
Chapin High School will see a stunning new theater, and Irmo High School is set to focus on entrepreneurship with a brand-new small business incubator. There’s also a buzz about upgrades at the district’s career technical center, all thanks to insights from local advisory groups.
The referendum is not just about shiny new buildings; it’s also focused on keeping students safe. Plans include the installation of 12 new security rooms equipped with weapon detection systems and upgraded security cameras across all schools. Safety is paramount, and this funding will certainly help make every school a secure learning environment.
But that’s not all! The cash from the referendum will also tackle important repairs at eight schools, covering everything from HVAC replacements to roofing repairs and renovated restrooms. Those repairs are essential to keep the schools running smoothly and comfortably.
Now, for all the parents and community members wondering about costs: you’ll be pleased to know there will be no tax increase for residents. The tax increase threshold is only triggered when the district requests funds exceeding $400 million in a previous referendum. So, here’s your chance for a confident upgrade without extra costs!
Ross is also planning to introduce a “Citizen’s Advisory Review Team,” which will allow community members to stay informed and play a more active role in overseeing these exciting projects. What a fantastic way to keep everyone engaged!
As the district prepares to roll out these initiatives, residents can look forward to a brighter, safer, and more innovative educational experience in Chapin. It’s a thrilling time for the community, and everyone is excited to see all the positive changes this funding will bring!
