Welcome to Fall: Columbia, S.C. Faces Sweltering Temperatures and Incoming Tropical Rain

Umbrella and Sunshine

Welcome to Fall in Columbia, S.C.: A Warm Start with a Splash Coming Soon!

Columbia, South Carolina, is kicking off the first week of fall with some bustling weather news that might just have you reaching for your umbrella. As temperatures continue to soar in the 90s to begin the work week, we’re also keeping an eye on some tropical moisture headed our way later this week.

A Hot Start to Fall

Can you believe it? On the very first day of fall, the temperature climbed up to a steamy 97 degrees this afternoon! This unseasonable weather means that we’ll be feeling summer vibes a little longer—at least through Tuesday. Expect another mild night with lows cruising down to the lower 70s under those beautiful clear skies.

Typical Warm September Days

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday promise to be quite warm as we flirt with those upper 90s. The forecast tells us we’ll see a blend of sun and clouds, and while most of the week will be fair, who knows? A few stray showers might toss in a surprise or two during the afternoons. All in all, it’s shaping up to be another lovely late summer week!

What’s Brewing in the Gulf?

Excitingly, this week isn’t just about the heat. Over in the Gulf of Mexico, meteorologists are tracking a tropical cyclone that is expected to take shape by Wednesday. With forecasts becoming increasingly cohesive, it seems likely this weather system will head northward through the Gulf, potentially making landfall in the Florida Panhandle late Thursday.

Rainfall on the Horizon

Once this tropical system makes its way toward the Carolinas, we should prepare for some heavy rain—especially Thursday evening into Friday. We’re looking at a possibility of 1 to 3 inches of rain slapping down over our region. Make sure you’re ready with your rain gear and perhaps some cozy indoor plans!

Mid-Week Weather Overview

Here’s what to expect day-by-day:

  • Tonight: Mostly clear skies to enjoy a mild evening, with lows resting in the lower 70s.
  • Monday: A blend of sunny and cloudy skies with highs again reaching the lower 90s.
  • Tuesday: Partly cloudy throughout the day, and don’t forget: a stray shower or storm could make an appearance. Highs will be in the lower 90s.
  • Wednesday: Expect conditions to dip a bit to the upper 80s along with a 30% chance of showers and storms.
  • Thursday: We will see some partial sunshine, but scattered showers are likely as highs drop down to the lower 80s.
  • Friday: Hold onto your hats because heavy rain is possible with the tropical system getting closer, with highs also in the lower 80s.

Stay Prepared and Connected!

It’s a week down here in Columbia that seems to waver between summer warmth and the rainy realities of fall. Whether you are soaking up the last rays of summer or bracing for a rain-soaked weekend, it’s essential to stay informed and prepared for anything that comes our way.

So grab your sunglasses while you can, but don’t forget the umbrella! Get ready for a week of fluctuation, as we embrace the last whispers of summer before we dive deeper into fall.
