Lexington Man and Teen Killed in Tragic Motorcycle vs. Pedestrian Crash
Details about the Fatal Accident
Lexington, SC – A tragic incident unfolded late Tuesday evening on August 20, when a man checking his mailbox was involved in a fatal collision with a westbound motorcyclist on the 200 block of Kyzer Road. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has now identified the victims in this fatal motorcycle vs. pedestrian accident as Kevin Scott Collins, aged 63, and James Leonard Elly, III, 17, both from Lexington.
Coroner Margaret Fisher revealed that Collins was crossing the road near his mailbox when he was struck by Elly who was travelling at speed on his motorcycle. Despite emergency service’s best efforts, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe injuries they each sustained.
Helmet Not Enough to Save Teen Motorcyclist
Crucially, Elly, the motorcyclist, was reported to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, pointing to the severe impact of the crash. Authorities suggest that the force of collision, rather than lack of protective gear might’ve resulted in the unfortunate outcome.
Passenger Sustains Minor Injuries
Further, a passenger on the motorcycle also suffered injuries during the crash but was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital. Their injuries have been stated to be non-critical, and they are expected to recover soon.
Investigations Underway by Highway Patrol and Coroner’s Office
The South Carolina Highway Patrol alongside with the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are jointly investigating the tragic incident.
