Mike DeSumma from the Columbia Richland Fire Department reminds us that this is often the first time of the season people turn on their heaters. “You can’t leave them unattended,” he says. “Just like cooking, once those heaters are on, you’ve got to keep an eye on them!”
Next, be sure to place your space heater on a flat, stable surface. An unstable setup can lead to a tip-over and, well, that’s a recipe for disaster!
Keep an Eye on Fireplaces
If you’re planning to cozy up by the fireplace this holiday season, you’ve got to do your part in making sure it’s safe, too! “Always keep a watchful eye on your fire,” DeSumma adds. And don’t forget to have your chimney checked out before the holidays kick off to ensure everything is running smoothly. A yearly inspection can help protect you from potential hazards that might be lurking!
Give Your Christmas Tree Some TLC
If you’re going the traditional route with a real Christmas tree, remember to keep it well-watered. DeSumma warns, “If it dries out, you essentially have live kindling in your living room!” Yikes! Keeping your tree hydrated is not just a festive touch; it’s an essential safety measure that can save you from potential fires caused by dry branches.
Check Your Lights and Decorations
Speaking of decorations, it’s time to pull those out of storage. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns that nearly one-third of all Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems. So, before you start stringing up those lights, give them a good once-over!
“Take a close look at the wiring,” DeSumma suggests. “Year after year, exposure to the elements can lead to frayed wires, and that’s when it’s time to replace those strands.” While you’re at it, ensure that any light displays are plugged into the right outlets—overloading them can be dangerous!
Be Cautious with Candles
Candles can add a magical touch to any holiday celebration, but Open flames require caution. If you love the ambiance they create, consider switching to battery-powered candles instead. These flickering lights can give you all the cozy vibes without the risk of fire.
