Firefighters Battle 2 Working Fires Simultaneously in Irmo

Irmo, SC – Fire crews and multiple resources from the Irmo Fire District, County of Lexington’s Fire Service, West Columbia Fire Department, and the City of Columbia Fire Department responded to a challenging situation on Thursday morning when they had to battle two working fires at the same time in the Irmo Fire District’s response area.

Residential Structure Fire on Townes Road

The first incident unfolded in the 200 block of Townes Road around 10:30 a.m. Upon arrival, crews were met with a heavy volume of fire engulfing several sections of a residential structure. Despite the significant damage caused by the fire, the residents were not present in the home at the time. However, several pets were successfully rescued, and there were no reported injuries in this incident.

Garage Fire on West Passage

As firefighters were actively working to contain the fire on Townes Road, a second structure fire was reported within the Irmo Fire District. At 11:05 a.m., additional crews from the City of Columbia Fire Department and Lexington County’s Fire Service rushed to a residence in the 400 block of West Passage. The second fire was focused in the garage area, but the flames had already spread, causing heat and smoke damage to other parts of the house. Similar to the first fire, the residents were not at home during this incident, and there were no reported injuries.

Efficient Response Despite Challenging Weather

Despite a thunderstorm passing through the area at the time, the Irmo Fire District’s strong automatic aid agreements with neighboring agencies proved invaluable. The coordination among the responding units ensured that both fires were extinguished, and the district had sufficient coverage from additional units. The causes of the fires are currently under investigation.
