Exciting Changes Coming to Five Points with the Arrival of A Cocky Rooster!

COLUMBIA — The vibrant neighborhood of Five Points is buzzing with excitement as a new chicken restaurant, A Cocky Rooster, prepares to open its doors in the area! This popular chain will take over the spaces previously occupied by Sushi Yoshi and the iconic Carolina Barber Shop, promising a tasty addition to the local dining scene.

Historic Buildings Get a New Lease on Life

In a move that combines history with culinary delight, developers are seeking tax credits from the City of Columbia. These credits, made available under the Bailey Bill, aim to support the renovation of these two historic buildings located at 2019 and 2021 Devine St.. City officials will review these requests at a forthcoming meeting scheduled for December 19.

The Carolina Barber Shop has been a beloved fixture in the community for almost 90 years. Last summer, the barbershop was forced to relocate to the Arcade Mall on Main Street to make way for new adventures in dining. Meanwhile, the space at 2019 Devine St. has been sitting empty since the closure of Sushi Yoshi in 2021.

A New Dining Experience Awaits!

The plans for Cocky Rooster are ambitious and exciting. A wall separating the two buildings will be taken down to create a spacious dining area. In addition, a vintage tile ceiling from 1959 will be removed to reveal the building’s original 1930s ceiling charm. Just imagine indulging in mouthwatering chicken wings while soaking in the history of the space!

Cocky Rooster, which originally hails from Virginia, has been making quite a splash since its inception in 2020. They are known for their scrumptious chicken wings and vibrant atmosphere. With this new location, they hope to connect with locals and university students alike.

When Can You Get a Taste?

The Columbia location will be under the management of Curtis Lyons, a knowledgeable restaurateur with years of experience in the industry. Guests can expect the restaurant to be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, while late-night cravings can be satisfied from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Officials have expressed enthusiasm about this venture, citing the close proximity to the University of South Carolina as a key factor in their decision to set up shop in this lively area. With many students always on the lookout for delicious and convenient dining options, Cocky Rooster could soon become a favorite spot for both locals and college kids after a long night out.

Five Points: A Hub of Activity

The arrival of Cocky Rooster follows a trend of new eateries sprouting up in Columbia over the past few years, revitalizing the bustling Five Points district. Known for its rich history as an urban village and shopping area, Five Points has transformed through the years, yet retains its charm that draws people in.

As renovations progress, local residents can look forward to the seamless blend of historical significance and modern dining experiences. All signs point to Cocky Rooster being an exciting addition to the Griffith family of local eateries!

So why not keep an eye on the corner of Devine and Harden streets? Very soon, you’ll be able to sit down, kick back, and savor some of the tastiest chicken wings and more right in the heart of Five Points!
