Starting this October, our cherished Columbia Museum of Art will be hosting the magnificent exhibition titled ‘French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850 – 1950’. This exciting showcase, organized by the Brooklyn Museum, promises to bring a collection of over 50 superb artworks right here to our city.
The exhibition kicks off on Saturday, October 5, and will last until January 5, 2024. So, if you’re up for diving deep into the world of French art, mark those dates on your calendar! Everything about this exhibition, from its extensive collection to the historic significance of the pieces on display, is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Between the Revolution of 1848 and the end of World War II, France underwent massive social, political, and cultural transformations. During this vibrant era, Paris emerged as the heart of the art world, where celebrated artists began to break away from traditional styles and embrace bolder, more expressive techniques. This exhibition will take you on a fascinating journey through various art movements, including Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism.
Prepare to be captivated by the works of some of the most renowned artists in history. Discover stunning masterpieces by Claude Monet, famous for his breathtaking landscapes and depictions of light; Henri Matisse, known for his vibrant color use; and Edgar Degas, who beautifully captured the grace of dancers. You’ll also see works from Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Berthe Morisot, and many others who contributed to shaping the modern art movement.
To celebrate the exhibition’s debut, there will be a special French Moderns Preview Party on Friday, October 4. This is an exclusive chance for you and your friends to enjoy a festive evening while getting a sneak peek at the artwork. Ticket sales for the party opened to the public on Friday, September 6, so make sure to grab yours before they sell out!
Michael Neumeister, the Senior Curator at CMA, expressed just how special this exhibition is, saying, “It is rare for works with this degree of importance and quality to travel outside of major institutions. This presents a wonderful opportunity for our community to experience significant works of art by some of the most familiar and important names in art history.”
And for those venturing out to the museum, the weather in Columbia is looking just lovely! On this fine day, expect considerable cloudiness with temperatures reaching a maximum of 78°F. Gentle breezes will be blowing in from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph. As the evening approaches, temperatures may cool down to a comfortable 63°F, making for a pleasant outing!
So gather your friends and family, and come witness the beauty of French modern art right here in Columbia. Whether you’re a long-time admirer of these great artists or are just looking for a weekend adventure, this exhibition has something for everyone. Don’t forget to engage and connect with other art enthusiasts during this fantastic experience!
