Dinosaur Delight on Augusta Road Brings Holiday Cheer to Lexington
LEXINGTON, SC – Most folks might not typically think of dinosaurs when they picture a cozy holiday season, but that’s exactly the scene at the Price household on Augusta Road. This charming family has transformed their yard into a prehistorical paradise, filled with dino-themed decorations that twinkle under festive lights. You won’t believe your eyes because giant foam dinosaurs are the main attraction, set against a backdrop of festive cheer!
A Landmark of Fun
According to Christopher Price, the mastermind behind this unique display, his colorful crew of dinosaur friends has become a bit of a local landmark. “People drive by and can’t help but take notice,” said Price, grinning from ear to ear. Each year, he adds more dino characters to the yard, and the current collection features an impressive 11 dinosaurs of various sizes and species. “It all started a couple of years ago when I created a dinosaur just for my two sons, who are now 8 and 6. They loved it, and we’ve just kept expanding since then.”
Christmas Dino-vation
This year, the dinosaurs didn’t just come out for Halloween as they normally do; they are staying up to celebrate the festive holiday season! Price recalls the conversation he had with his family when deciding to keep the display up longer. “I asked everyone if I should put them away, and while my wife wasn’t too keen on the idea, the boys were totally on board. So I said, ‘Sorry, you’ve been outvoted!’”
From Pterodactyls to T-Rex
Each dinosaur in the yard has its own unique flair, ranging from a pterodactyl soaring through the skies to a speedy velociraptor running around. However, the pièce de résistance must be his initial creation, an absolutely stunning ankylosaurus complete with realistic scales and spikes. From the front, these creatures look ferocious and alive, especially when lit up at night, clearly visible to all passing cars. But sneak around to the back, and you’ll find they are just flat foam boards cleverly propped up!
Inspiration from a Classic
Price’s creative spark was ignited by his love for classic movies, especially the iconic “Jurassic Park.” “The idea of capturing that thrilling world of dinosaurs,” he shared, “has been a driving force behind my creations.” The yard even features a whimsical replica of the famous Jeep from the movie, cleverly crossing over a stream of blue Christmas lights. You won’t want to miss the triceratops that lays on its side, perfectly mirroring a scene from the film. “Every time I watch that flick, I still get goosebumps!” Price exclaimed.
A Heartfelt Mission
This year, the family added a splash of pink to their dominant dinosaur, Lex the T-Rex, as a part of a fundraising effort for breast cancer research. Inscribed with the names of about 80 individuals who’ve battled cancer, this lively yet meaningful decoration helped generate a fantastic total of $1,500 for the American Cancer Society. “It was a fun way to give back, and I plan to keep doing it in the future,” said Price, proudly.
A Community Hit
As the dinosaur spectacle continues to draw families from not just Lexington but far beyond, Price and his family are thrilled with the response. Imagine over 300 trick-or-treaters stopping by last Halloween, all eager for a photo-op with the dinosaurs. “The kids just love it!” Price stated. “I’ve got more ideas popping up, but I think the dinosaurs are here to stay. That’s really what’s made us known around here.”
So, if you find yourself driving on Augusta Road, take a moment to stop and soak in the enchantment that these playful dinosaurs bring to the holiday season. Because who says the joy of Christmas can’t coexist with a few giant dinosaurs? Happy Holidays from Lexington!
