All Girls Matter Conference Lights Up Columbia, South Carolina

The vibrant city of Columbia, South Carolina, was buzzing with excitement this past Saturday as the All Girls Matter Empowerment Conference welcomed young girls from ages 9 to 18 at the prestigious Darla Moore School of Business. With a clear purpose in sight, the conference set out to empower girls by fostering connections and sharing personal experiences, and it surely delivered on those promises!

Focus on Real Issues

The event featured a range of thought-provoking topics, including mental health and self-image. In a world where social pressures can weigh heavy on young girls, discussions on these important issues were invaluable. Young attendees were encouraged to open up about their own journeys and experiences, helping to create a supportive and understanding atmosphere.

Fun-Filled Activities

But it wasn’t all serious talk! One of the highlights of the conference was seeing the girls come together to engage in joyful activities like singing and dancing. Holding hands and forming new friendships, the energy in the room was unmistakably positive, creating bonds that could last a lifetime.

A Line-Up of Inspiring Speakers

The conference was not short on inspiration, with group sessions led by an impressive array of speakers. Voices from various fields, including government officials, doctors, educators, entrepreneurs, and authors, shared their valuable insights and experiences. Attendees were given a unique chance to listen and learn from some of the best in their respective fields, which was sure to ignite a fire within the participants.

A Day Filled with Learning and Growth

To wrap up the day, participants enjoyed a tour of the women’s basketball facilities, giving them a taste of what it’s like to be part of a team. This experience not only encouraged an appreciation for sports but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and dedication.

Behind the Scenes

The vision for this empowering event came to life thanks to the dynamic duo of Markeshia Grant and Dr. Tragil Wade-Johnson. Grant, a team-building coach for South Carolina women’s basketball, was crucial in bringing this initiative to the forefront. She met Wade-Johnson just a couple of months earlier during a camp hosted by South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, and the two quickly clicked. At an event in Virginia, the idea to host the All Girls Matter conference in Columbia was born, tapping into the growing momentum around girls’ empowerment and women’s sports.

A Special Message from Dawn Staley

Even though Staley was in Paris for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games, her spirit was with the conference, as she agreed to record a video message. Her focus on the importance of discipline and how it shapes one’s life resonated deeply with the girls and left a lasting impression.

Taking It Nationwide

Wade-Johnson, who has been busy hosting this conference across seven different cities in the United States, was thrilled to see the response in Columbia. She expressed admiration for Staley, highlighting her authenticity and leadership as qualities that inspire others to follow in her footsteps. With Wade-Johnson being the sister of former NBA player Dwyane Wade, the connection to sports and empowerment runs deep.

Creating Future Leaders

Monaé Bispham, a college readiness expert, led a session designed specifically for girls entering the fifth grade. Her focus on unlocking personal potential was a powerful reminder that every girl has the ability to strive for greatness. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Bispham expressed her admiration for Staley’s dedication, especially as a mother of a baby girl.

Overall, the All Girls Matter Empowerment Conference proved to be a remarkable event, filled with laughter, learning, and, most importantly, empowerment. Columbia, South Carolina, has once again shown that when it comes to lifting up young girls, community and support can create a brighter future!
