Lexington Welcomes Community to the Grand Opening of Old Mill Pond Trail

Lexington Celebrates Grand Opening of Old Mill Pond Trail

Hey there, friends! If you’re in or around Lexington, you may have noticed some exciting buzz in town lately. Well, it’s all thanks to the grand opening of the much-anticipated Old Mill Pond Trail, which finally took place on Friday morning. Residents gathered with smiles and enthusiastic spirits to see this long-awaited outdoor space come to life!

A Trail Years in the Making

Can you believe this trail has been in the works since 2012? It all started as a part of the town’s Vision Plan, which aimed to enhance the area with walking trails and greener spaces. However, like many plans, this one faced its share of challenges, especially when the historic flooding struck the Carolinas in 2015. The floodwaters took a serious toll, breaching several local dams, including the earthen dam at Old Mill.

Fast forward nine years, and we are finally celebrating a collective win! Thanks to committed public and private partnerships, the Old Mill Pond Trail is ready for everyone to enjoy. It’s incredible how a community can come together to rebuild and create something beautiful!

Your New Favorite Walking Spot

The trail itself is a 1.15 mile paved loop that seamlessly wraps around the picturesque Lexington Mill Pond. It’s designed with nature lovers in mind, featuring various bridges and lookout points that offer stunning views of the area’s flora and fauna. There are also relaxing seating areas conveniently placed throughout, perfect for taking a break and soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Planning a visit to this lovely new trail? Here’s some essential information to make your trip easy and enjoyable:

  • Bicycles are allowed on the trail (just no E-bikes).
  • ADA accessible & handicapped parking is available close to the Old Mill Brew Pub.
  • Thinking about wet activities? You’ll have to hold off on fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming, as they are not permitted.
  • No motorized vehicles are allowed, with wheelchairs being the only exception.
  • Furry friends are welcome! Just remember to keep your dogs leashed.
  • Parking can be found at a few convenient locations: 711 E. Main Street, 717 Main Street, and 510 S. Lake Drive.

The chance of rain today is sitting at a worrisome 90%, but that shouldn’t deter adventure seekers from exploring the trail. Be sure to stay safe and **make sure to consider** the local weather before you set out.

What’s Next for Lexington?

As this new trail opens its doors, it shows a renewed spirit in the Town of Lexington, emphasizing the importance of green spaces and community bonds. We can’t wait to see families walking, jogging, and biking along the trail and creating wonderful memories in this beautiful part of town.

We hope you will take the time to visit the Old Mill Pond Trail sometime soon. It’s a fantastic opportunity to embrace the outdoors, get some fresh air, and connect with nature while supporting local efforts for revitalization.

And who knows, you might even bump into your neighbors and friends enjoying the new space as well!
