A man from Savannah, Georgia, has admitted guilt in a case involving an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old girl in Lexington County, South Carolina. Michael Shawn Copson, 37, was sentenced to 28 years in state prison after pleading guilty to two counts of criminal sexual conduct.
According to the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, Copson would make trips from Georgia to visit acquaintances in Lexington County where he initiated a relationship with the teenage girl. The solicitor’s office revealed that Copson confessed to engaging in sexual contact with the girl during their nine-month relationship before it was exposed and reported to authorities.
Assistant Solicitor Ashley Wellman reported that Copson used manipulation tactics rather than physical force to groom the girl, including purchasing inappropriate gifts, isolating her from her family, and exerting intimidation. Copson has been in custody at the Lexington County Detention Center since November 11, 2022, following his extradition from Georgia.
After his guilty plea, Copson will be immediately transferred to the South Carolina Department of Corrections to serve his 28-year sentence for the two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the second degree. He is not eligible for parole and will be required to register as a sex offender upon release.
The solicitor’s office emphasized the seriousness of the case and the impact of Copson’s actions on the victim, urging continued awareness and vigilance against such predatory behavior.
