Date: Friday, 17 May 2024 22:25:04 GMT

Lexington County, S.C.

A head-on collision on US 321 in Lexington County claimed the life of a Summerville man, according to a statement released by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the victim as 53-year-old Whiteford McWaters.

The Fatal Incident on US 321

Authorities say McWaters was traveling North on US 321 when the crash occurred. According to official reports, another vehicle traveling South in the North lane collided with McWaters’ vehicle in a direct head-on collision. McWaters, tragically, was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained fatal injuries as a result.

Fisher confirmed that McWaters was urgently rushed to a local hospital following the accident, where he was later pronounced dead. McWaters’ sudden and unexpected death has, understandably, left his family and the wider community in a state of shock.

Investigation Underway

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash with McWaters was also injured, although the extent of their injuries has not yet been disclosed. The individual was transported to a local hospital for medical care. Their current condition is unknown.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office in conjunction with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. As the investigation remains ongoing, more information is to be released as and when it becomes available.

A Call for Road Safety Vigilance

This incident tragically highlights the ever-present risks faced by drivers on South Carolina roads each day. Authorities urge drivers to always wear their seatbelts and obey traffic laws at all times to foster a safer road culture.

Moreover, it stresses the importance of defensive driving, specifically avoiding errant vehicles that may inadvertently drift into your lane. With careful observation and swift reaction, fatal outcomes may be averted in circumstances like these.

As we mourn the loss of yet another life on our roads, the importance of road safety vigilance cannot be overstated. Awareness saves lives.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. McWaters during this difficult time.
