In a heartwarming celebration at the Kirkland Campus of the South Carolina Department of Corrections, a group of inmates proudly donned their caps and gowns, marking an incredible milestone in their lives. On Friday, a dedicated group of 18 inmates celebrated their graduation from a remarkable college initiative program in partnership with Columbia International University (CIU). The ceremony was filled with joy, pride, and a shared belief in second chances and personal growth.

Rusty’s Journey: A Testament to Perseverance

Among the graduates was 74-year-old Rusty, a vibrant figure who made waves not only for his age but also for his inspiring journey. After making four attempts to get accepted into the program, Rusty finally got his chance and didn’t look back. “This opportunity at my age, being able to attend college and seek out an associate of arts degree was a blessing that I did not deserve,” he shared with a glint of gratitude in his eye. “I appreciate it very much. I’m very grateful to the donors and the people who are in support of this ministry,” he added, his emotion palpable in the air.

Embracing Educational Opportunities

The graduation ceremony didn’t just mark the end of a learning journey for these individuals; it highlighted their commitment to bettering themselves through education. Program director, Dr. Andre Melvin, spoke passionately about the impact the program has had on the inmates. “They seize opportunity to better themselves, to grow, to learn,” he remarked. “They are so grateful and appreciative of our program and of our faculty coming in and sharing life with them.” This bond between students and faculty creates a supportive community that fosters both learning and encouragement.

Dr. Melvin emphasized the ongoing commitment to their success. “We encourage them as much as we can. We tell them they can do it. They can accomplish it,” he said. The belief in their potential is an integral part of the program, “We also, of course, believe that God will help them,” he added.

This year’s ceremony celebrated the 15th cohort, a significant milestone that echoes the success of the initiative. Each year, eligible inmates are carefully selected through a thorough application and interview process to embark on this transformative two-year journey led by CIU professors.
