COLUMBIA: A Hotel Boom in The Vista!
Hey there, Columbia! There’s some thrilling news shaking things up in our vibrant The Vista district. If you’ve strolled through this lively neighborhood lately, you’ve probably noticed an increase in construction buzz. Yes, you guessed it! A hotel boom is hitting The Vista, aiming to ensure visitors have plenty of comfy spots to rest their heads.
From Warehouses to Wow!
Can you believe it? Just a few decades ago, The Vista was mostly filled with old warehouses and factories. But times have changed, and thankfully so have the buildings! Those century-old structures are now being transformed thanks to historic tax credits. Developers are scrambling to renovate these beauties to take advantage of the exciting nightlife and attractions we have here in Columbia.
One leading realtor, Alia Bostaji, shared with us that applying those historic credits greatly helps offset construction costs, making it easier to get these ambitious projects off the ground. Isn’t it amazing how past treasures can pave the way for our future?
Room for More Fun & Events!
As it stands, The Vista is not just an entertainment hot spot but is also becoming a potential paradise for out-of-towners. With the influx of visitors, the area faces a significant hotel room shortage. This shortage has, unfortunately, driven big-name events like the NCAA’s March Madness away. However, the city is eagerly trying to change that!
Plans are in Full Swing
Furthermore, Columbia City Council is set to vote on a proposition that could allow taller buildings, especially hotels, to rise high in the skyline. Currently, height restrictions cap buildings at about 75 feet or roughly five stories, something that has raised eyebrows with some local residents. There’s a promising future ahead!
New Faces in The Vista
So, what new hotels can we expect? Well, let’s go over some exciting projects. First up is the highly anticipated Homewood Suites and Tru by Hilton hotel at the corner of Gervais and Williams streets. This seven-story marvel is nearing completion, boasting a fantastic 249 rooms and reportedly opening for bookings as early as January. A few neighbors voiced concerns about the towering structure infringing on views, but construction marches on!
Just a block away, there’s a cozy four-story hotel sprouting at the intersection of Huger and Senate streets. This project is making its mark after receiving approvals for a smaller design, reducing the height from five to four stories. With plans for gym facilities and a dining area on its first floor, this hotel will be a hit!
More Boutique Vibes!
Meanwhile, our friends at the beloved boutique hotel, Hotel Trundle, have exciting plans for a second location. It will occupy the old Epes-Fitzgerald Paper Company building on Gadsden Street, and they’re targeting a 2026 opening date while navigating the historic building’s challenges! They’re sure to bring that unique charm to The Vista!
On a slightly larger scale, plans are underway for a massive 301-room Hyatt hotel and an 183-unit apartment building near the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. These developments aim to uplift the area further and address the long-standing hotel shortage!
A Bright Future!
The exciting hotel developments extend also to the old fire station on Senate Street. The forthcoming Shepherd Hotel promises to bring added character to the area while honoring its past! Not to forget the plans for a possible convention center hotel, which would be a game-changer for attracting multi-day and out-of-state conventions.
So, Columbia, let’s keep our eyes peeled and our spirits high as our beloved Vista area transforms with more hotels coming our way. It’s all about growth and connecting our community while embracing the history that makes The Vista unique. Here’s to more visitors, more fun, and a thriving economy as our neighborhood continues to evolve!
