Columbia’s Beloved Hunter-Gatherer Brewery Set to Close After Almost 30 Years

Columbia, we have some sad news that’s about to hit you right in the feels! After nearly three decades of serving up delicious craft brews and mouth-watering meals, the iconic Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse is closing its doors for good this month. The Main Street stomping ground at 900 Main St. will officially close on December 28. The news broke this past Friday morning in a heartfelt Facebook post from none other than the founder himself, Kevin Varner.

A Fond Farewell

In the emotional announcement, Varner expressed his sadness over the closure, stating, “It is with a sad and heavy heart that we announce the closing of our Main Street location. It has been an incredible privilege and a pleasure to host you over these 29+ years.” He added, “We thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives over the years. It’s been a great run.” Can we get a collective “awww” from the crowd?

Although it’s tough to say goodbye, the good news is that the Hunter-Gatherer Hangar location at 1402 Jim Hamilton Blvd.—near the Jim Hamilton – LB Owens Airport—will remain open and continue to serve up those beloved local brews.

A Local Staple Since 1995

Hunter-Gatherer first opened its doors back in 1995, marking a big moment as Columbia’s first micro-brewery. Varner’s passion for both English and American ales, combined with his overseas experience, helped establish Hunter-Gatherer as a well-known staple in the Midlands. The Main Street spot has been famous for its in-house brews like the popular Hazy IPA, Gravity IPA, and their infamous pale ale. For nearly three decades, it’s been a cozy gathering place filled with dark woods and inviting vibes — just perfect for date nights!

The menu? Oh, it’s to die for! Think mouth-watering shrimp and grits, juicy burgers with hand-cut fries, and fresh goat cheese salads. It’s no wonder this place has been a hit among locals!

Emotional Reactions Pour In

When the word spread on social media about the closure, it didn’t take long for fans to express their feelings. The post attracted over 325 reactions, more than 120 comments, and nearly 70 shares within the first hour alone! One fan remarked, “This place has been my extended living room for decades, and where I learned to appreciate craft beer.” Another chimed in saying, “This will be a huge loss for all of us who love high-quality food and beer in a casual, friendly setting.”

Local figure Tracie Broom, co-founder of a public relations firm, echoed the sentiments of many, sharing her history with Hunter-Gatherer. She wrote, “It’s an institution and will be very missed.” And really, who could argue with that?

What’s Next?

All good things must come to an end, but as the saying goes, every ending is a new beginning! While it’s bittersweet to see the Main Street location close, we can still enjoy our favorite brews at the Hangar. As Varner puts it, “While we are sad to see this chapter of the original HG come to a close, please know that the Hangar location is still going strong.”

So before the doors finally swing shut on the Main Street location, why not stop by and relive some of those fantastic memories? Raise a glass and toast to the many years of friendship, great food, and even better craft beer at Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse. Cheers to you, Columbia!
