On a sunny Friday afternoon, the atmosphere at the Kirkland Campus of the South Carolina Department of Corrections was nothing short of electric! A group of determined inmates proudly donned their caps and gowns, celebrating a milestone that many thought was out of reach: college graduation.

Thanks to a groundbreaking initiative in partnership with Columbia International University (CIU), eighteen graduates walked the stage to receive their associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Family and friends filled the hall, showering the graduates with love and support, marking this important achievement in their lives.

Among the graduating class was the remarkable Rusty, a spirited 74-year-old who has become an emblem of perseverance. After applying four times, Rusty finally got his chance to attend college, and he couldn’t be more grateful. His heartfelt words resonated through the hall: “This opportunity at my age, being able to attend college and seek out an associate of arts degree was a blessing that I did not deserve, but I take it. I appreciate it very much.”
