Integer Technologies Pioneers Future Defense Innovations in Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia: The Hub for Future Defense Technologies

In the heart of South Carolina, an exciting revolution is unfolding in the defense technology sector. Welcome to the world of Integer Technologies, a vibrant company that’s quickly making a name for itself. Founded in 2021, this innovative firm focuses on identifying technology gaps within the U.S. Department of Defense, swiftly transforming solutions from university labs into practical applications for the military. Just three years into its journey, Integer has already claimed the top spot on the 50 Fastest Growing Companies in South Carolina list!

Making Waves in Autonomous Systems

Integer Technologies has set its sights on autonomous systems, particularly for naval applications. Recently, the team developed an impressive prototype designed to assist unmanned service vessels (USVs) with navigation and collision avoidance. Under the leadership of co-founders Duke Hartman, CEO, and Josh Knight, COO, the company is tapping into their extensive backgrounds in engineering and defense. Hartman, a professional engineer with deep roots in the maritime industry, along with Knight, an expert in managing research and development teams in the defense sector, are steering the ship toward a promising future.

Interestingly, these two entrepreneurs kicked off their venture during the pandemic. Despite the challenges of that time, their idea has blossomed, allowing them to forge strong partnerships, notably with the U.S. Navy through the Office of Naval Research. “We help develop better eyes, ears, and brains for robotic ships, robotic submarines, and robotic airplanes,” Hartman remarked, highlighting their commitment to enhancing military capabilities.

Collaboration with Local Universities

A significant engine behind Integer’s rapid growth is its collaborative approach with local universities, which brings both innovation and additional research funding. “There is in South Carolina, and particularly where we are in Columbia, a base of tech, or a base of STEM talent that I think folks outside don’t fully appreciate,” Knight shared. Their primary partner is the University of South Carolina, and they’ve recently expanded their reach to include Louisiana State University and Benedict College.

These partnerships not only push the envelope on technology but also bolster the local economy, creating jobs and contributing to workforce development initiatives. With a shared goal of enhancing the technology landscape, Integer Technologies focuses on getting their innovative solutions into the hands of sailors, marines, and airmen.

Building Trust Through Testing

Despite some early successes, one of the most pressing challenges Integer faces is building trust around automated systems—a hot topic within military circles. The founders recognize that simply presenting information isn’t enough to gain the confidence of potential users. Their mantra? “Don’t just tell them, but show them.” By testing early prototypes on actual vessels, the team continually learns and improves their systems, demonstrating progress with every iteration.

Putting Research into Action

The quest to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and practical application is not just a job for Hartman and Knight; it’s their passion. “What’s hard about what we do is also what excites us the most and is the most inspiring in terms of a goal: putting research into action,” Hartman concluded, encapsulating the essence of their mission.

As Columbia’s Integer Technologies continues to grow, it brings with it a sense of optimism and innovation. From its strong university partnerships to its cutting-edge technological advancements, the company not only aims to bolster defense capabilities but also enrich the local community and economy. The future looks bright for defense tech in South Carolina, and Integer Technologies is at the forefront of this exciting journey!
