Student Arrested Following Threats at Irmo High School

Columbia, South Carolina – A tense atmosphere surrounded Irmo High School this week after the discovery of a threatening message, prompting the school to ramp up security measures. The incident unfolded on Thursday when officials revealed that graffiti containing a threat was found in one of the school’s bathroom stalls. In a letter to parents, Principal Dr. Kaaren Hampton made it clear that the school is taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of its students and staff.

Increased Security Presence

In response to the alarming discovery, deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department increased their visible presence on and around the campus. The school’s location, which is nestled at the intersection of St. Andrews Road and Harbison Boulevard, typically bustles with activity, but on this day, the community felt a heightened sense of caution.

To bolster security even further, all students entered the building through an OpenGate weapon detection screening system. This initiative was put in place to ensure that nothing harmful entered the school environment, reflecting the administration’s commitment to the protection of their students.

An Active Investigation

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is actively investigating the graffiti threat. The concerning message was initially reported late on Wednesday night through the STOPit app, which allows students to report issues anonymously. This rapid notification system aimed to set off a swift response from school officials, who are dedicated to keeping the campus safe.

Interestingly, after the threat surfaced, images began circulating among students via various group chats and social media platforms. However, many students stated that they had no knowledge of the source or specific details about the threat, leading to a whirlwind of speculation and anxiety.

Priority on Safety

In her communication with parents, Principal Hampton emphasized that safety and security are the school’s top priorities. Every threat is taken seriously, and in this case, the institution acted out of an abundance of caution despite limited information available about the incident.

Students and staff were strongly encouraged to report any concerns they had, whether directly to trusted adults or anonymously through the STOPit app. This line of communication is critical in fostering an environment where students feel secure enough to voice their worries.

A Related Incident

Adding to the unease, a separate incident was reported where a student was charged on Tuesday for making threats against other students on social media. The involved student, whose identity is withheld due to being under 18, has been charged with making threats to a school and was subsequently released into the custody of their mother. Family Court will handle the upcoming proceedings.

A Calm Campus Amidst Concerns

Despite the unsettling events, it is reassuring to note that the sheriff’s department reported no disturbances or interruptions occurred on campus. Furthermore, the initial notification regarding the threat was relayed to local law enforcement from the FBI, showcasing the collaborative effort to maintain safety.

In the wake of these events, both parents and students from Irmo High School continue to navigate their day-to-day activities with a cautious mindset, while safety protocols remain a top priority. As the investigation unfolds, the entire community looks forward to a resolution that ensures the well-being of everyone on campus and beyond.
