As the calendar inches closer to September 13, 2024, excitement is palpable in Irmo, South Carolina. We have a special honorary firefighter here, eleven-year-old Brooks Mixson, who is all set to lace up his running shoes for the Tunnel to Towers 5K. This annual event isn’t just another race; it’s a powerful tribute to our brave first responders, military service members, and the 343 firefighters from the FDNY who lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
Brooks isn’t just participating to run a race; he has a deeper purpose. Having grown up around the Irmo Fire Department since the tender age of five, he has formed a strong bond with the firefighters, admiring their courage and dedication. In April 2024, he had the life-changing opportunity to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City. The experience opened his eyes to the sacrifices made by so many and the importance of honoring their legacy.
“It’s a really special day for me,” Brooks said, his enthusiasm radiating. “It really means a lot to me and all these firefighters that work within the state and country.” He emphasizes that this is more about remembrance than just running; it’s about keeping the spirit of those who risk their lives to protect others alive.
This year, Brooks has a personal connection that makes this race even more significant. He will be honoring Irmo firefighter James Muller, who tragically passed away while battling a 3-alarm fire in 2023. Brooks feels that it’s important to recognize local heroes like James, whose legacy continues to inspire aspiring firefighters and community members alike.
The Tunnel to Towers 5K in Irmo is not just another exercise event; it’s a heartfelt gathering meant to strengthen community bonds and pay respects to those who serve. The ceremony for the event will kick off at 6 p.m., setting the stage for a moving tribute. The race itself is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., allowing participants like Brooks to channel their emotions into every step of the run.
More than just a race, this event aims to create awareness and foster connections between community members, encouraging everyone to take part and express their support for those who keep us safe. Residents of Irmo and beyond are encouraged to come out and cheer on the participants, transforming that evening into a sea of support and solidarity.
As the date approaches, the excitement is brewing not only among participants but also within the entire community. This event encapsulates the heart and spirit of Irmo—its dedication to honoring those who sacrifice for our collective safety. Whether you’re walking, running, or cheering from the sidelines, being a part of the Tunnel to Towers 5K is an incredible way to show appreciation for first responders and military members.
So, mark your calendars for September 13! Let’s rally together to make this event a remarkable remembrance and a celebration of heroism. With Brooks leading the way, this will undoubtedly be an evening filled with inspiration, gratitude, and camaraderie.
