Irmo, S.C. Prepares for Tunnel to Towers 5K in Honor of First Responders and Military Heroes

IRMO, S.C. Gears Up for the Tunnel to Towers 5K

As the crisp autumn air approaches, the town of Irmo, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement for a very special event. On September 13th, 2024, the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K will kick off, allowing participants to honor the bravery and sacrifice of first responders and military members alike. This year marks a heartfelt run for one particularly inspiring participant—a young honorary firefighter named Brooks Mixson.

A Commitment to Honor

At just eleven years old, Brooks has a remarkable deep appreciation for the work that firefighters do. He has practically grown up at the Irmo Fire Department, spending time with the firefighters since he was around five. His passion for honoring those who serve inspires many in the community.

This upcoming race isn’t just about running; for Brooks, it’s a chance to commemorate the 343 FDNY firefighters who sacrificed their lives during the infamous September 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities daily. He mentions his motivation fondly: “It really means a lot to me and all these firefighters that work within the state and country.”

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial

Brooks’s commitment to honoring these heroes was solidified during a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City earlier this year. He experienced firsthand the weight of what those sacrifices mean—not just on that fateful day, but every day since. By participating in the race, he hopes to carry that spirit of remembrance with him as he runs.

Remembering Irmo’s Fallen Hero

Brooks is also running in memory of Irmo firefighter James Muller, who tragically lost his life in a 3-alarm fire in 2023. This personal connection adds another layer of significance to the event for Brooks, as he carries both loss and hope with him. He feels proud to represent those who, like James, put their lives on the line to save others.

Event Details

The event’s ceremony is set to commence at 6 p.m., followed by the race itself starting at 7 p.m. Joining together for this race is not just about the physical challenge; it’s also a time for individuals to connect with their community, celebrate heroism, and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many.

For seasoned runners, family members, and supporters alike, this event represents a larger purpose. It’s about showing appreciation for those who keep us safe and reminding ourselves of the resilience of the human spirit. No matter what your fitness level is, everyone is welcome to join in, cheer for their favorites, and enjoy the festivities of the evening.

Join the Movement

If you’re planning to participate, whether you run, walk, or just come to support, remember that each step taken is a step towards honoring those who protect and serve. Brooks’s enthusiasm is infectious, and it is sure to inspire many more to lace up their shoes and join this noble cause.

As the date approaches, Irmo looks forward to coming together for a heartfelt tribute that transcends the finish line. So mark your calendars and get ready for a night that promises to be meaningful and memorable!
