This past weekend, Columbia was buzzing with excitement as over 8,000 people flooded into the historic grounds of the Mann-Simons house museum for the 46th Annual Jubilee Festival. A cherished tradition in our community, this festival is known for its vibrant celebration of African American entrepreneurship that flourished in the area from 1843 to 1970.
The Jubilee Festival, which began in 1978, has grown from a small gathering of neighbors into what we see today—a lively and heartwarming event that is officially the longest-running festival in Columbia. It’s a festival that truly embodies the spirit of the community, being organized by a volunteer steering committee that pours their heart and soul into the planning each year.
It’s inspiring to learn that this celebration was created to honor the rich history of African American businesses that once thrived along these grounds. The outdoor museum established by Historic Columbia in 2018 stands as a testament to this legacy, showcasing the local commerce that provided essential services like a lunch counter and mercantile store, as well as residences where community members could shop, eat, and connect socially.
This year’s festival was filled with energy, laughter, and a diverse array of activities. Visitors enjoyed live entertainment throughout the day, featuring a variety of performances from local artists that left everyone tapping their toes and clapping along. One could hear the beats of drums, feel the rhythm of dancers, and bask in the enchanting atmosphere created by the performances.
In addition to the musical acts, many talented demonstration artists showcased their crafts, providing attendees with a chance to see their skills in action. The variety of booths created a colorful marketplace where vendors sold delicious food and unique wares, making it impossible to leave without sampling something scrumptious!
The Kids-Zone was particularly popular among young festival-goers. Parents were thrilled to see their children engaged in educational and family-friendly activities. From arts and crafts to interactive games, the Kids-Zone provided a safe and fun environment where they could explore and express their creativity.
One of the heartwarming aspects of the Jubilee Festival is its emphasis on community. There was a strong presence of informational booths, allowing attendees to connect with local organizations and learn more about the services available in Columbia. This community outreach is vital in keeping the spirit of togetherness alive, inspiring us all to support one another.
If you missed out on this year’s festival, don’t worry! The community spirit and the love for our rich history still linger in the air. The Jubilee Festival stands as a reminder of what Columbia has always been about—a celebration of culture, unity, and entrepreneurship. This festival was a beautiful way to connect with our roots while looking forward to a bright future. Here’s to many more years of celebration at the Jubilee Festival, where the community continues to come together, honoring the past and embracing the future.
