Lake Murray is gearing up for a thrilling September, and you won’t want to miss what’s happening in our beautiful city! With abundant sunshine and pleasant temperatures expected to reach a high of 83°F, there’s no better way to celebrate this fantastic weather than by getting outside and enjoying some amazing activities.
The excitement starts on September 26 with the much-anticipated Youth Angling Day, happening at Gibson Pond Park in Lexington from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.. This fun-filled event is open to children ages 4 to 18 and brings together kids of all abilities to explore the wonderful world of fishing. Best of all? It’s completely free!
Thanks to the efforts of the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board and USAngling, kids will get the chance to learn from some of the best in the business. Participants will engage in hands-on education through the International Game Fish Association’s Passport to Fishing Program. They will receive expert instruction from USAngling athletes, coaches, and ambassadors.
Activities will include fishing instruction, practice with essential fishing gear, and even learning essential knot tying techniques. Children will enjoy spinning rods and reels while engaging in fun casting games, and of course, they’ll have the chance to actually fish in the pond—with expert guidance on how to hook, handle, bait, and release fish. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon, doesn’t it?
Vickie Davis, the Senior VP of Funding and Events at CCLMC, expressed her excitement, saying, “We’re thrilled to bring Youth Angling Day to Gibson Pond Park. This is a fantastic opportunity for kids of all abilities to dive into the world of fishing, learn from the pros, and enjoy a day of fun and education.” We couldn’t agree more!
But don’t pack away your fishing gear just yet! Following Youth Angling Day, from September 27 to 29, Lake Murray will transform into a hub of international competition with the upcoming Pan American/USAngling Challenge Cup Kayak Championship. This prestigious event will see elite kayak anglers from around the globe showcasing their talents on our beautiful waters.
Competitors will travel from countries such as Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines, Venezuela, and many more, all vying for the title in this highly competitive arena. Pan American nations will compete for the title of 3rd Pan American Kayak Fishing Championship, while other international participants will pursue the coveted USAngling Challenge Cup.
September is shaping up to be a fantastic month for Lake Murray, blending fun, education, and competition all in one! Whether you’re a young fishing enthusiast ready to learn the ropes or a watching fan of the exciting competitions, there’s something for everyone.
