Lexington, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the Lake Murray water plant expansion project, a significant endeavor that has been in the works for the past eight years, inches closer to completion. This project aims not only to increase the plant’s capacity but also to enhance the overall quality of water, making it even more appealing for residents and businesses in the area.
The Lake Murray water plant, known as the largest water treatment facility in Lexington County, has been working diligently to ensure that the community has access to clean, safe drinking water. Earlier this month, during a special council meeting in West Columbia, city authorities received an exciting update on the expansion project from Andy Zaengle, the director of engineering and water plants. The great news? The project is surprisingly ahead of schedule!
The journey to expand the plant officially began in 2016, starting with the goal of increasing water capacity to meet rising demands. As the planning progressed, city officials recognized the need to combat common complaints regarding the taste and odor of the water. Listening to their customers, they decided to incorporate advanced technologies into the upgrade. Construction kicked off in April 2023, focusing first on addressing capacity, and a remarkable 30% of the project has already been completed.
The budget for this ambitious project is estimated at $86 million, a significant investment that reflects the city’s commitment to providing high-quality water to its residents. Zaengle emphasized that, “Our customers expect to be able to turn the faucet on and have water there; they don’t want to hear or be under use restrictions.”
One of the standout features of the expansion will be the implementation of ozone technology, a game-changer that will cost around $40 million. This innovative method addresses the organic compounds that sometimes linger in the water, effectively oxidizing and removing them. According to Zaengle, “The plant will be the only one in the midlands with ozone technology and one of only five in the state.”
Why is this technology so critical? It stems directly from the feedback of the community. Zaengle explained that customers have voiced their concerns about unpleasant odors and tastes. To ensure everyone can enjoy a refreshing glass of water or a nice cup of sweet tea without any funny smells or tastes, this technology is being adopted. Zaengle noted, “Listening to what they want done, this is how you address it and this is the most efficient way to address it.”
Currently, the water plant has a capacity of 27 million gallons per day, but with this expansion, it will soar to 36 million gallons per day. Zaengle reassured residents that despite the scale of this project, the funding will come from a variety of sources, including bond funds, and it won’t directly lead to an increase in water bills for customers.
Curious about how the plant itself will look after all these updates? Don’t expect a dramatic transformation! According to Zaengle, most of the expansion work will be underground, so while there will be some new structures, the overall appearance of the plant will remain relatively unchanged. “If you were to walk from the beginning to end, you’ll notice that there is a difference, but it’s not going to end up being except for those in part really that there are a whole new set of structures out here that weren’t here before,” he said.
The Lake Murray water plant expansion project is set to be fully completed by 2027, and it’s exciting to know that Lexington is taking such proactive steps to ensure its residents have access to high-quality drinking water for years to come. So, let’s raise a glass to clean, fresh water in Lexington!
With these positive developments, the community can look forward to a brighter, fresh-water future. Stay tuned for more updates as this essential project continues to unfold!
