A Lexington County man, Charles Wesley Varn, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after causing a tragic crash that resulted in the death of an eight-week-old infant. Varn was speeding and under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. This sentencing aims to bring closure to the affected family while emphasizing the serious consequences of drunk driving.
Lexington County is reeling from a heartbreaking incident as a local man has received a 25-year prison sentence linked to a tragic crash that claimed the life of an eight-week-old infant. Charles Wesley Varn, 66, was sentenced for his role in this devastating event that unfolded on August 13, 2023, on SC 302 near Pelion.
On that fateful day, Varn was behind the wheel of a 2017 Toyota Tacoma, speeding at approximately 100 mph in a zone where the limit was just 55 mph. In a moment that would change lives forever, he struck the back of a 2007 Saturn Vue, which caused the car to overturn. Tragically, young Gabriel Arroyo was seated in an infant car seat in the rear of the Saturn and succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the violent crash.
Initially, Varn denied having consumed alcohol. However, as the investigation unraveled, he confessed to drinking prior to the incident. Law enforcement discovered an open container of alcohol inside Varn’s vehicle at the crash site, raising alarm bells about his choices that day. A subsequent blood test revealed that Varn’s alcohol content was a staggering 0.194, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 in South Carolina. The test results also indicated that he had prescription drugs in his system as well.
This isn’t Varn’s first brush with the law. His past includes a troubling history with six prior DUI convictions dating back to 1986, as well as serious offenses like assaulting a police officer and firearm-related charges. Experts believe this history played a significant role in the judge’s decision during sentencing, as there was a pressing need to prevent him from repeating his reckless behavior.
During the courtroom proceedings, the emotional toll of the incident was palpable. Gabriel’s mother expressed profound grief over the loss of her son, while his father lamented how this tragedy had completely broken his heart. They hope that Varn’s harsh sentencing will serve as a warning to others and potentially save future lives from suffering similar heartbreak.
Judge Roger M. Young, Sr. underscored the necessity for intervention in cases like Varn’s to ensure that he does not endanger more lives. Given that Varn was convicted of felony DUI involving a fatality, he will not be eligible for parole during his sentence.
In light of the sentencing, Varn has now been transferred to a South Carolina Department of Corrections facility where he will begin serving his time. The hope is that this sentence may bring a small degree of closure to Gabriel’s family, while also serving as a stark reminder of the severe consequences associated with drunk driving.
As the community of Lexington County continues to grapple with this tragedy, it is clear that the loss of young Gabriel Arroyo will not be forgotten. This incident has sparked conversations about road safety and the importance of responsible driving in a bid to prevent such senseless tragedies from recurring.
