Lexington County Solid Waste Management is teaming up with Lexington County deputies to help make Lexington County litter-free. The collaboration is part of the annual statewide “Zero Tolerance for Litter” campaign taking place throughout the month of April 2024.
The initiative, led by the South Carolina Litter Control Association, law enforcement agencies, and PalmettoPride, aims to raise awareness of litter laws in South Carolina. By enforcing these laws and educating the public on the impact of littering, the campaign seeks to create a cleaner environment.
During April, deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will work alongside Solid Waste Management officials to educate residents on state litter laws and promote responsible waste disposal practices. The campaign includes various forms of advertising, such as billboards, social media messaging, and flyers, to inform the public about littering regulations.
One of the key focuses of the campaign is ensuring that residents properly cover and secure their loads, including items like tires, trash bags, and wood waste, while driving. The message “Tarp Your Trash, Even Trash Bags” will be displayed prominently to remind individuals to prevent littering by securely covering their loads.
The Zero Tolerance for Litter campaign in Lexington County is supported in part by the Litter Enforcement Grant from PalmettoPride. The county received funding amounting to $6,500, which will be used to purchase equipment and resources for litter control efforts.
PalmettoPride, in partnership with the South Carolina Litter Control Association, advocates for a strict stance against littering and illegal dumping through the annual campaign. By highlighting the consequences of littering and emphasizing law enforcement’s role in combating it, the campaign aims to instigate positive behavioral change.
Residents of Lexington County are encouraged to adhere to state litter laws, cover their loads properly, and dispose of waste responsibly to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The joint efforts of Solid Waste Management and law enforcement underscore the importance of community engagement in preserving the beauty of Lexington County.
