The community of Lexington in Lexington County has planned a smorgasbord of activities for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Notwithstanding the weather forecast, these events are bound to offer a fun-filled family time outdoors.
Bill’s Music Shop & Pickin’ Parlor on Meeting Street has organized its annual Memorial Day Dance & Potluck event commencing at 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The event honours the nation’s fallen heroes with a potluck dinner, dance music by a live band, a flag ceremony during the band’s intermission, and a DJ spinning tunes between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Patrons are prompted to bring along a dish or dessert to share. Entry is secured with a $10 donation.
Simultaneously, the Lexington Towne Center II on Lake Drive is organising a Memorial Day BBQ. Local residents can savour a plate of pulled pork, beans, slaw, and BBQ hash for $10. They can also contribute the same amount to sponsor a meal for someone in need. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Central Midlands Transitional Retreat, a foundation that houses and delivers services to homeless veterans in the region.
For an alternative Memorial Day experience, locals are invited to Craft Axe Throwing on East Main Street. This popular spot is offering the perfect combination of leisure and gratitude for those serving in the military from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants can take part in axe throwing games while commemorating the sacrifice made by our armed forces.
Another fascinating event lined up for the day is the Memorial Day lunch cruise around Lake Murray. The Spirit of Lake Murray will embark at 1 p.m. and return at 3 p.m. Guests can enjoy a full-service bar and a wide variety of lunch options coupled with indoor and outdoor seating.
Rounding off the local Memorial Day events is a community memorial service at the Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church on Leaphart Road. The service, starting at 6:30 p.m., will remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country. This commemoration invites everyone to celebrate their legacy collectively and will feature a special tribute to veterans, individuals currently serving, and the community’s first responders. A reception will immediately follow the service.
On Friday, May 24, the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery on Percival Road will be requesting public help to place flowers on veterans’ graves. This gesture will serve as a solemn remembrance of the purpose behind the Memorial Day celebrations.
On Sunday, May 26, the Palmetto Concert Band will be playing an all-patriotic music show at the Koger Center for the Arts on Greene Street. The event, which starts at 4 p.m., is open to all and guarantees fun for the entire family.
All these upcoming local events serve as a gentle reminder that Memorial Day is a time to honour the fallen, to remember the sacrifices made for our country, and to celebrate the freedom we currently enjoy. It’s a time to come together as a community, to show our gratitude, and to remember the value of service and sacrifice.
