Lexington Man Killed by Teen Motorcyclist on Kyzer Road

A tragedy occurred in Lexington, South Carolina, when a 63-year-old man simply crossing the road to check his mail was struck and killed by a 17-year-old motorcyclist. The teenager was also killed in the accident, with a passenger suffering minor injuries.

Details of the Accident

According to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, Kevin Scott Collins, 63, was crossing the street at the 200 block of Kyzer Road after checking his mailbox when the fatal accident occurred on Tuesday around 10 p.m. The motorcyclist, identified as James Leonard Ely III, was traveling west.
Both men, Collins and Ely, were declared dead at the scene.

Motorcycle Passenger and Safety Measures

The teenager, Ely, had with him a passenger who suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. It is reported that at the time of the crash, Ely was wearing a helmet. Despite the precaution, the accident still resulted in fatal consequences.

Investigations Underway

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the unfortunate incident. At 15 years old, teenagers are eligible to get a beginner’s motorcycle license from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Investigators are working to ascertain the complete details of what happened.

The Lexington community mourns the loss of two of their own tonight, with friends and family of both men expressing immense sorrow for the untimely deaths. Collins, a known figure in his community, was a loved neighbor, where Ely, despite his young age, left a mark on those who knew him.
