Authorities have revealed the identities of two individuals who lost their lives in a fatal motorcycle vs. pedestrian accident that unfolded late Tuesday night in the serene Lexington County neighborhood. The unfortunate incident occurred when the pedestrian, upon retrieving his mail, attempted to cross a local street.
Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the victims of the unexpected accident to be Kevin Scott Collins, aged 63, and James Leonard Elly III, a 17-year-old motorcyclist, both residents of Lexington. The harrowing incident took place around the 200 block of Kyzer Road.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 PM after Mr. Collins went to check his mailbox. As he made his way across the street, he unfortunately encountered an oncoming motorbike which was ridden by Elly. The two happened to collide, leading to fatalities on both sides due to injuries induced by the accident.
Elly, who lost his life in the accident, was wearing a helmet during this unfortunate incident. Despite it, Elly could not prevail over the intensity of the collision and was pronounced dead on the scene. Similarly, Collins who was struck down during the incident also couldn’t survive the severe injuries sustained from the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The accident also encompassed a secondary rider on the motorcycle who fortunately sustained minor injuries. They were immediately transported to an area hospital for treatment and emergency care. The condition of this individual remains unknown to the public at present.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, together with the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, have launched an investigation into the matter. Despite the late-night conditions of the accident, they expect the investigation to shed light on additional details of the incident, including aspects pertaining to road safety, speed factors, and visibility conditions at the time of the accident.
In times of such calamities, community support is essential. The members of Lexington county extend their condolences to both families as they grapple with their loss. Safety reminders and mournful messages have taken circulation on social media, calling for road safety awareness and caution.
