New Era Begins for Lexington SC with Inaugural USL Super League Season

An exciting development is enveloping Lexington, Kentucky as the local soccer franchise Lexington Sporting Club (SC) is set to partake in a new journey. The club’s brand new team is preparing to feature in the inaugural season of the United Soccer League (USL) Super League, a fresh league in women’s professional soccer.

Excitement Builds for Debut Game

This weekend will mark the commencement of this new era for Lexington SC. The USL Super League team will take the pitch on Sunday afternoon, marking its debut in the Division One professional women’s soccer league that began competition this month.

The city’s sporting community is buzzing with anticipation. The team’s head coach, Mike Dickey, encapsulated this feeling perfectly, stating, “I’m really excited. You know, game day for a coach, for a player is extremely exciting. So to finally have the team in place here in Lexington ready to compete in our first ever professional game as a team, [it’s] super exciting.”

A Step Forward for Women’s Professional Soccer

The USL Super League is a milestone in women’s professional soccer in the United States. In its debut season, the league includes eight teams, with plans for more clubs to join in the coming years. Providing a platform that encourages growth and development in women’s soccer, the league operates on a “fall-to-summer” soccer calendar traditionally followed worldwide, contrasting with the men’s team that plays within the same calendar year.

One of the team’s players, MaryKate McGuire, expressed her joy about the launch of the league. “It’s been a really, really long time coming. Like, I signed with Lexington back in January so it’s been several, several months. And for it to finally be here and be a reality, we are so, so excited to get started,” McGuire said.

Schedule and Anticipation

For their inaugural game, Lexington SC will face Carolina Ascent FC on Sunday. The game will take place at 2:30 p.m. American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte.

The team is also preparing to make its grand home debut. Following their away game, they will play at the brand-new Lexington Stadium on Sunday, September 8th at 4 p.m.
