Lexington Sporting Club, a distinguishing presence in Central Kentucky’s football scene since its founding in 2021, is stepping into a new chapter this weekend. The club is ready to unveil their pioneering USL Super League team, which will take the field for the first time on Sunday afternoon in the newly formed Division One professional women’s soccer league that started competition earlier this month.
As the inaugural season of the USL Super League commences, it marks a significant leap in promoting and growing women’s professional soccer in the United States and sets a momentous phase for Lexington SC.
The head coach of Lexington SC’s USL Super League, Mike Dickey, showed enthusiastic anticipation as he remarked, “I’m really excited. Game day for a coach, for a player is incredibly thrilling. So to finally have the team in place ready to compete in our first-ever professional game as a team – super excited.”
The USL Super League will feature eight teams in its first season, with plans to expand in the coming years. The league will align itself with the “fall-to-summer” soccer calendar widely followed globally, contrasting the men’s team that plays within the same calendar year.
Expressing her joy, a Lexington SC USL Super League player, MaryKate McGuire, revealed, “It’s been a really, really long time coming. I signed with Lexington back in January, so it’s been several months. Now that it’s finally here and becoming a reality, we are so excited to get started.”
The Lexington SC team will make their league debut against Carolina Ascent FC on Sunday at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. They return later to play in the a new Lexington Stadium for their inaugural home fixture on Sunday, September 8th.
As a new age in women’s professional soccer dawns in Lexington, the Sporting Club and its supporters look forward to an exciting season filled with inspiring performances from the new USL Super League team.
