The scene at a residential property in Lexington, South Carolina, turned sinister as fire officials uncovered a body amidst the remains of a home fire. Identified as Caldwell Melton Motley, Jr., the 38-year-old Lexington local was pronounced dead at the scene, bearing multiple stab wounds as revealed by Coroner Margaret Fisher.
The house, situated on the 200 block of Oak Ridge Lane, became the center of a death investigation after the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD) discovered Motley’s lifeless form on Saturday. Noticing smoke wafting from the structure’s roof, arriving deputies immediately sensed that the scene inside would be grim.
Further escalating the situation, deputies located another man in a shed near the unfortunately affected home. This second victim, presenting with a swollen face and occasional lapses in consciousness, was immediately transported to the nearest hospital where he is anticipated to recover.
“I’ve lived here since 2000. Not one time have we ever had a crime in this area,” stated neighboring resident Pamela Smith. This sentiment echoed throughout the neighborhood as residents grappled with the sudden invasion of crime into their peaceful habitation.
Ryan Broach, another area local, expressed disquiet about the situation, saying, “I’ve always felt safe in this neighborhood. This is the first real incident where I don’t know exactly what’s going on.”
Authorities were unable to comment when questioned if foul play was suspected or whether the incident had launched a criminal investigation.
The joint forces of the LCSD, the State Law Enforcement Arson Team, and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are currently undertaking the inquiries surrounding the incident. These agencies aim to swiftly bring to light any criminal involvement responsible for this grim situation.
As investigations continue into this tragic Lexington incident, locals are encouraged to remain informed, prepared, and alert. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the friends and family of Caldwell Melton Motley, Jr. during this difficult time.
