Columbia’s Malfunction Junction Set for Major Upgrades
Columbia, South Carolina, has been the site of an extensive overhaul to its infamous Malfunction Junction, and the news just keeps getting better for local drivers. If you’ve spent any time navigating the chaotic interchange of Interstate 26 and Interstate 126, you’ll be glad to know that a significant phase of the project is nearing completion. Project manager Brian Klauk recently announced that Phase 1 of the Carolina Crossroads project is set to wrap up by October 14.
What’s Completed So Far?
The completion of this phase means that some long-awaited improvements to the troublesome interchange will be realized. The work done so far has included the extension of the exit ramp from I-26 to Sunset Boulevard, along with the construction of a new bridge at Colonial Life Boulevard. This also includes new connectors from Colonial Life onto both I-26 and I-126. Klauk said that the final touches—some of which were due for completion just days ago—are moving ahead beautifully.
The upgrades aim to address the frustrating traffic conditions that have led to the nickname “Malfunction Junction.” Klauk highlighted the positive impact on daily commuters saying, “The average person will save 122 hours a year not sitting in traffic at Malfunction Junction.” Sounds like a great improvement for both commuters and freight transport alike!
A Look Ahead: Phases 2 and 3
As Phase 1 concludes, work on Phase 2 is already underway. This phase focuses on enhancing the connection between Broad River Road and I-20, which will involve the construction of two new overpasses. Klauk humorously noted, “There’s a hole where the old bridge used to be,” but residents can look forward to seeing two new bridges in that space soon. This will greatly enhance traffic flow in the area.
Moving on to Phase 3, this is where things get serious! This part of the project represents 50% of the total $2 billion budget and focuses on improving the main interchange between I-20 and I-26. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) broke this phase into five smaller sections to make progress smoother and more manageable over the next several years.
Utility Relocation and Other Preparations
Crews have already begun the necessary relocations of utilities and clearance of structures along the interstates. Recently, a major contract was awarded to clear out about 170 acres adjacent to the project site, which is expected to pave the way for future development. Between 2025 and 2026, there will be substantial work on widening I-20 from Bush River Road to Sunset Boulevard, including a replacement of bridges to withstand potential flooding, similar to what the area faced back in 2015.
The Grand Finale and Future Outlook
As work progresses, the final adjustments to the I-126 interchange and the widening of I-26 are also slated to commence in the coming years. Klauk has mentioned that upcoming work is expected to bring about a major facelift to the driving experience through Columbia. By 2029, drivers can look forward to a revamped, efficient cloverleaf intersection between I-20 and I-26, meaning no more treacherous lane weaving for those trying to navigate through the junction.
