A 26-year-old mathematician at White Knoll High School in Lexington County, South Carolina, has been accused of criminal solicitation of a minor according to an announcement made by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD) on February 12, 2024. The accused, named Timothy Garrison, has allegedly used the dating application, Bumble, and the social media platform Kik, to engage with a 14-year-old girl.
A warrant issued for his arrest asserts that Garrison knowingly began communications with the minor in November of 2023. During their interactions, it is reported that Garrison broached inappropriate topics with the girl, including queries regarding her preferences for sexual activities. The warrant emphasizes that Garrison involved himself with the child expressly with the intention of persuading or coercing her into participating in sexual activities.
Garrison was subsequently apprehended and detained at the Lexington County Detention Center, but was released after producing a surety bond of $5,000. The specific details connected to the release are currently not provided.
Lexington County School District One issued a formal statement on Monday in response to the arrest. According to the announcement, they’re cooperating fully with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. The statement also has it that the teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
The school district also assured concerns, stating that there’s no indication that Lexington One students have been affected by the charges against Garrison.
Reportedly, this investigation forms part of a broader crackdown on internet crimes against minors. As law enforcement continue their work, investigators are urging local citizens to come forward if they have any additional information regarding this case, or others similar to it.
Ensuring the safety of minors from online predators has universal importance. Authorities are reminding parents and guardians of the importance of maintaining open lines of communication about online safety with their children, as well as monitoring their internet activities to protect them from potential dangers.
For minor-aged individuals navigating the internet, it is paramount they are educated on the importance of reporting any suspicious online interactions and so, can maintain their safety both by themselves and in collaboration with their parents or guardians.
